COVID-19 updates: Trash collection delayed; SEPTA workers test positive (updated)

Posted on 03 April 2020 by WestPhillyLocal.com

UPDATE (Friday, April 3, 2020): Starting Monday, April 6, recycling will be picked up in Philadelphia every other week (through May 15th or further), so there will be no recycling collection next week. Residents are asked to put out their recyclables the following week. Trash collection will continue every week.

(4/2/2020): The coronavirus pandemic has started disrupting some city services, according to reports. Some neighbors noticed that their trash was not picked up yesterday. Delays with trash collection in the city should now be expected, reports Plan Philly, as more sanitation workers are calling out of work.

“While delivering on-time collection services remains an essential core service, residents are asked for their patience and cooperation while we work to deliver service,” the City’s Streets Department representative told Plan Philly.

If your trash or recycling hasn’t been picked up, you can report your block to 311.

UPDATE: The Streets Department is currently one day behind and will be working into this weekend to make sure all trash and recycling are collected. Residents should continue to set out their trash on their normal collection day. Continue Reading

Public schools to be closed Wednesday due to snowstorm; Snow Emergency to begin at 8 a.m.

Posted on 06 March 2018 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Philadelphia is preparing for another snowstorm, and the School District has announced that all public schools will be closed Wednesday, March 7. All after-school activities including all athletic programs and professional development sessions scheduled for Wednesday are canceled as well. All District early childhood centers will also be closed.

A Snow Emergency will be declared for the City of Philadelphia beginning 8 a.m. on Wednesday, which means that all parked cars must be moved off Snow Emergency routes for plowing. When moving your car, park as far from the corner of the street as possible; vehicles parked too close to the corner get in the way of snow plows trying to turn corners.

Snow Emergency information and a map of Snow Emergency routes can be found here. Cars left on Snow Emergency routes will be moved to other parking spots. If your car is moved, call 215-686-SNOW to find it. Please do not call 911.

All trash and recycling collections will be suspended for Wednesday, and will be one day behind for the rest of the week.
