Snow emergency declared; vehicles on emergency routes (including Walnut and Chestnut) will be towed

UPDATE (1/29/2022): The snow emergency will be lifted at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29. This means vehicles can be parked again on snow emergency routes after 5 p.m.

(1/28/2022): The City of Philadelphia has announced that it will declare a snow emergency beginning at 7 p.m. tonight, meaning vehicles need to be moved from emergency routes for plowing or face towing.

Snow emergency routes in West Philly include :

• Walnut and Chestnut Streets from Broad Street to the Cobbs Creek Parkway
• Woodland Avenue from Baltimore Avenue to Island Avenue
• 38th Street (and then University Avenue) south of Walnut
• Girard Avenue from the river west to Lancaster Avenue
• Lancaster Avenue from Girard to City Avenue.
• Cobbs Creek Parkway and 63rd Street

When moving vehicles, the City advises drivers to park as far from street corners as possible.

Vehicles left on snow emergency routes will be moved to other parking spots to assist in snow plowing operations. If your car is moved, call 215-686-SNOW (7669), and press option four (4), to find it. Do NOT call 911.

Snow emergency declared for Thursday, Feb. 18, starting at 6 a.m.

UPDATE (2/18/2021, 7:35 p.m.): The snow emergency has been lifted. It’s now allowed to park vehicles along snow emergency routes.

(2/17/2021): Another storm is approaching the Philadelphia area and is expected to bring up to 6 inches of snow. The City has declared a snow emergency beginning at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18. Be sure to move your vehicle to a safe location if it’s been parked on a snow emergency route. The list of snow emergency routes can be found here.

Snow Emergency declared for Sunday, Feb. 7 as another snowstorm approaches

UPDATE (2/7/2021, 5:00 p.m.): The snow emergency has been lifted.

(2/6/2021): Another snowstorm is expected to hit the Philadelphia area this Sunday, with accumulations from 3 to 6 inches. In preparation for the storm, the city has declared a snow emergency beginning at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7. If your vehicle is parked on a snow emergency route you must move it before 6 a.m.. Snow Emergency continues; No trash/recycling collection this Monday & Tuesday (updated)

UPDATE (2/1/2021): The snow emergency declared by the city on Sunday remains in effect until Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m. The City has suspended trash/recycling collection for this Monday and Tuesday (please wait until next Monday and Tuesday for your materials to be picked up). Public schools will again meet virtually on Tuesday morning and then have asynchronous instruction in the afternoon, according to a new announcement by the Philadelphia School District.

1/31/2021: The City has declared a Snow Emergency, effective Sunday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m., due to a major snowstorm expected in the area. Snow Emergency means that all vehicles parked along snow emergency routes, must be moved off the street. When moving your car, please park as far from the corner of the street as possible. The list of the city’s snow emergency routes can be found here. If your car has been towed please call 215-686-SNOW.

Public schools will meet virtually as usual in the morning and then turn to asynchronous instruction in the afternoon, according to a School District of Philadelphia announcement.

The City has also suspended all trash/recycling pickup for Monday, Feb. 1. Monday’s collection is postponed until next Monday, Feb. 8.  Continue Reading

Public, parochial schools to be closed Wednesday; Snow Emergency to begin at 9 a.m.

The city of Philadelphia is preparing for heavy snow through tomorrow evening. The Philadelphia School District has announced that all public schools will be closed Wednesday. All parochial elementary and high schools will also be closed.

The City has declared a Snow Emergency beginning at 9 a.m on Wednesday, which means all vehicles parked along snow emergency routes must be moved to another location to allow plowing. Snow Emergency information and a map of Snow Emergency routes can be found here. Public schools to be closed Wednesday due to snowstorm; Snow Emergency to begin at 8 a.m.

Philadelphia is preparing for another snowstorm, and the School District has announced that all public schools will be closed Wednesday, March 7. All after-school activities including all athletic programs and professional development sessions scheduled for Wednesday are canceled as well. All District early childhood centers will also be closed.

A Snow Emergency will be declared for the City of Philadelphia beginning 8 a.m. on Wednesday, which means that all parked cars must be moved off Snow Emergency routes for plowing. When moving your car, park as far from the corner of the street as possible; vehicles parked too close to the corner get in the way of snow plows trying to turn corners.

All trash and recycling collections will be suspended for Wednesday, and will be one day behind for the rest of the week.
