MLK Day events, volunteer opportunities

Philadelphia is getting ready to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, Jan. 20 with a bunch of events, activities and volunteer projects. Some began earlier this week and will be held throughout this and next month, like the MLK Jr. Sermon Discussion Group at Mosaic Community Church (123 S. 51st St).

Check out some events and volunteer opportunities in West and Southwest Philly below. Also visit the MLK Day of Service and the University City District websites for more events and volunteer projects in the area.

MLK Day Events at UPenn

• A Community Beautification Project will take place on Monday, Jan. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will work on service projects at the following sites: Mitchell Weir Elementary, Hamilton Elementary, Antioch Home School Center, and Laura Sims Skate House. Light refreshments will be provided. Meet at 9:45 a.m. in the main lobby of Houston Hall (3417 Spruce St) for transportation to locations.  Continue Reading

Where and when to watch New Year’s Eve fireworks; 2020 Mummers Parade info

If you’re looking for something to do this New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s Day, check out information below on New Year’s Eve fireworks and the 2020 Mummers Parade. New Year’s Eve Fireworks on the Waterfront

2020 is coming and you can ring it in twice on the Delaware River Waterfront on Tuesday. As always, there will be two firework shows  – at 6 p.m. and midnight, each about 15 minutes long. The best places to watch the fireworks are the Delaware River Waterfront, both Philadelphia and New Jersey sides. On the Philly side, you can get a great view from Penn’s Landing, at the Blue Cross RiverRink WinterFest, near the Battleship New Jersey, and more locations. One of our favorite places to watch New Year’s Eve fireworks is Race Street Pier near Ben Franklin Bridge (check out the map here).  Continue Reading

The Jazz Sanctuary presents a very special event: SANCTUARY JAM, a Jazz Event for students and the community of West Philly!

This is a FIRST for PHILLY – a partnership between Penn Music (University of Pennsylvania) and Drexel University (Westphal College of Media Arts & Design), St. Mary’s – Hamilton Village, and The Jazz Sanctuary: bringing to West Philly a Jazz event for the entire community.

The house band features two instructors from Penn and two instructors from Drexel. Listen to an hour of the best jazz found anywhere and then a Jazz Jam. Bring your instrument and jam with the house band! Pizza will be available to all who attend.  Continue Reading

Garden Court Community Association hosting meeting with Jamie Gauthier this Thursday

Newly elected Councilwoman Jamie Gauthier will be a guest speaker at the Garden Court Community Association’s fall membership meeting on Thursday, Nov. 14, which will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Apostles and the Mediator (260 S. 51st St.).

The proposed luxury apartment development near 51st and Spruce will likely be among the topics she will address. This meeting is an opportunity for residents to hear the newly elected Councilwoman’s thoughts on the neighborhood’s future and ask questions.  Continue Reading
