Volunteers at work at 47th and Sansom

Here’s an update on the Walnut Hill Playground improvement project, which broke ground last spring at 47th and Sansom.

Over the weekend, volunteers from Target, University City District, Do Moore Good, Green City Works, the Walnut Hill Community Association, and other community partners joined forces to help beautify the playground and nearby Sansom Street Garden.

The volunteers helped install new playground amenities, mulch and weed garden beds, and paint the Sansom Street Garden fence across from the playground. The effort brought together local organizations and volunteers to support a community space used by Walnut Hill families and residents.

West Philadelphia is once again taking center stage for the nation’s largest annual celebration of freedom. The Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade & Festival returns on Sunday, June 21, bringing an expected crowd of over 25,000 attendees to the streets of West Philly and the grounds of historic Malcolm X Park.

Organized by the Pennsylvania Juneteenth Initiative, the annual event honors the legacy of June 19, 1865—the day the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, received news of their freedom—while celebrating Black culture, economic empowerment, and community resilience.

The Parade

The day’s festivities kick off with the high-energy Juneteenth Parade at 12:30 p.m. The 1.5-mile procession will feature more than 2,000 participants, over 20 vibrant floats, dance troupes, and marching bands.

City officials and community members gathered Friday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the $4.5 million revitalization of the West Mill Creek playground and plaza located at 5100 Parrish St.. Completed in just six months, the community-driven project transforms a historically neglected space into a safer, greener public hub just in time for summer.

Funded primarily through the City’s Rebuild initiative (supported by the Philadelphia Beverage Tax), the project also received a $600,000 state grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Local Share Account program and a $500,000 contribution from 3rd District Councilmember Jamie Gauthier.
