Posted on 07 July 2022 by WestPhillyLocal.com

SEPTA’s Trolley Tunnel, which connects West Philly with Center City, will close for maintenance for more than two weeks starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, July 8. Trolley routes 10, 11, 13, 34 and 36 will not operate in the tunnel for the duration of this annual project titled “Trolley Tunnel Blitz”. Trolley service will begin/end at 40th and Market where riders may switch from/to the Market-Frankford Line.

During the 2022 Trolley Tunnel Blitz, SEPTA crews will conduct heavy cleaning and maintenance at all stations, replace worn track rail at various locations and four miles of overhead contact wire, as well as demolish and rebuild the full length of the eastbound 22nd Street platform.

The tunnel is expected to reopen for trolley service at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 25. For more information, check out this flyer.

SEPTA is working on a Trolley Modernization Project, a multi-year effort that includes the replacement of its entire fleet of trolleys with new, longer and more accessible light rail vehicles. The plan also includes the reconstruction of trolley stations to make the platforms more accessible, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A new trolley line will also be added in the Parkside area as part of this project.

Currently, SEPTA is gathering feedback from the community via an online survey. This short survey provides some additional information on the project and asks for your opinion on different elements, such as the design of the new vehicles and stations, trolley service, and more.

SEPTA  will suspend 15 trolley service beginning Sunday, Jan. 26 for 12 to 18 months due to ongoing trolley car maintenance issues and road projects. Bus service will be offered during this time, according to SEPTA.

Most of the 73-year-old Route 15 trolleys are aging fast, according to SEPTA. Only four out the 18 cars used on the route are in good working order. The 18 historic green-and-tan cars were rebuilt during the first Route 15 trolley service suspension (due to budget cuts), which lasted from 1992 until 2005.

Route 15 serves over 8,200 riders each day, according to SEPTA.

Shuttle buses replace Route 34 trolleys due to sinkhole (updated)

Posted on 04 June 2019 by WestPhillyLocal.com

The intersection of 43rd and Baltimore is closed due to a sinkhole (Photo West Philly Local).

UPDATE (6/5/2019): The sinkhole at 43rd and Baltimore was caused by a major sewer line break, according to SEPTA. Although the hole is only about 3 feet long on the surface, it extends approximately 20 feet across below the surface. While the Philadelphia Water Department crews are working to repair the hole (it might take a while), the Route 34 will continue to operate as a shuttle bus between 61st Street and the 40th Street Portal. Stay tuned for further announcements.

(6/4/2019, 9:53 a.m.): A large sinkhole has opened up at the intersection of 43rd Street and Baltimore Avenue, right in the middle of the Route 34 trolley line. The intersection is currently closed to traffic while constructions crews are preparing to dig up the street. As of 4:50 a.m. this morning, all Route 34 trolleys are being replaced by buses:

This sinkhole is just the latest in a long battle between developers, builders, planners and Mill Creek. This short film from four years ago shows the history.

Beginning Sunday, May 5 through Saturday, July 20, SEPTA will conduct a major track replacement and switch improvement project in the area of Lancaster and Lansdowne Avenues. Shuttle buses will replace all Route 10 trolleys between 63rd Street and Malvern Avenue and 33rd and Market for the duration of the project.

Temporary detours are expected through the spring and into the summer in the area of 54th St. & Lansdowne Ave. and Girard & Lancaster Avenues die to construction. But here’s the good news: the new tracks will provide a smoother ride for passengers, and new concrete and asphalt paving will also be installed the area.
