The city has invited developers to bid on 36 controversial properties on the 6200 blocks of Osage and Pine hastily rebuilt following the MOVE bombing in 1985.

West Philly bombing in 1985A fire began after police dropped a small bomb from a helicopter on a home at 6221 Osage Ave. following a long standoff with members of the black liberation group MOVE, who had barricaded themselves inside. Eleven people, including five children, were killed in the fire that followed the bombing. More than 50 neighboring homes were destroyed.

19th Century Powelton Village commercial strip protected, developer’s attorney vows fight

Meeting 3

36th and Lancaster

The city’s Historical Commission today added a strip of Lancaster Avenue commercial and residential buildings dating to the 1870s to the Registry of Historic Places.

The designation of the south side of the 3600 block of Lancaster Avenue requires Historical Commission approval of building or renovation plans.

An attorney for the property’s owner, AP Construction, vowed to appeal the decision.

The Powelton Village Civic Association began to pursue the designation last spring when it learned of AP Construction’s plans to demolish the block and reportedly sell it for student housing. With street-level storefronts and apartments on upper floors, the block anchors the main commercial strip in the neighborhood.

About 25 residents of Powelton Village were on hand at the meeting and nearly all raised their hands when asked if they agreed with the historic designation proposal.  Continue Reading

Keep an eye out for Teddy (found!)

Posted on 15 November 2010 by WPL

Teddy is a tabby (striped) kitty, long, with white paws and nose, about 12 lbs. His right ear is notched at the tip. He has no collar. He is an indoor-outdoor kitty who has lived on the 4500 block of Regent (between Chester and Kingsessing) since April ’09. He hasn’t been seen since Saturday (Nov. 13) afternoon. He is very friendly, fixed and microchipped, and up to date on his vaccines. He roams between the park and 46th, Chester & Kingsessing. His owner fears he may have been injured.

If you think you have seen him since Nov. 13, please call Barbara at 215-386-6461.
