West Philly organizations react to protests and civil unrest in Philadelphia, show support to Black Lives Matter movement (updated)

Over the last several days, many local organizations have posted public statements or messages reflecting on the protests and civil unrest in the city and on the issue of systemic racism, and showing their solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. We’re posting some of them below. Some of these messages include information on how you can help the local Black community and businesses in the aftermath of the recent events and also educational resources for non-Black individuals and families.

People’s Emergency Center (PEC):

“As we surveyed the damage of the weekend’s unrest in our neighborhoods, we shared a deep sense of sadness for business owners, community residents, and others who have invested so much to ensure access to vibrant commercial corridors to meet the needs of residents. ‘Round-up For Change’ applications open for West Philly organizations/causes

Mariposa Food Coop is currently accepting applications for their 2019-2020 Round-up for Change cycle. Through the program, Mariposa’s members and shoppers “round-up” their purchases to the nearest dollar and the extra change is then donated to Philly organizations, groups, and/or causes.

The first recipient will be selected for September 2019 and the cycle will run until August 2020.

Local non-profits gathering Saturday for first Community Action Fair at Calvary Center

West Philadelphia Community Action Fair will take place from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Calvary Center for Culture and Community (48th and Baltimore).

This Saturday afternoon, more than 10 community organizations will gather in the Calvary Center for Culture and Community as a part of the first two-hour West Philadelphia Community Action Fair.

Here’s the full list of participating organizations, you might recognize these names from around the neighborhood:

New grants and awards announced for West Philly schools, arts & culture organizations

Great news for some local schools and lots of arts and culture organizations, which recently received grants and monetary awards for their achievements, continuous service to the community and to support some new projects:

Lea Elementary The West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools (WPCNS) received a $20,000 grant for the Greening Lea project from the TD Green Streets program. A collaboration between the Arbor Day Foundation and TD Bank, this Green Streets grant was one just of 10 awarded to communities across the country. The grant will be used towards planting a large shade tree area over the green stormwater management system to be installed at the Lea play yard this year.
