Greensgrow West to reopen this Friday

Posted on 24 March 2016 by WestPhillyLocal.com

greensgrowwestSpring is in full swing and it’s time to stock up on your gardening supplies. The West Philly location of Greensgrow Farms is reopening this weekend just in time. Although smaller than the flagship location in Kensington, Greensgrow West features a fully stocked garden center.

Starting this Friday, you can stop by at 4912 Baltimore Avenue and pick up seeds and seed starting supplies, as well as soils, soil amendments, mulch and more. Also, spring bulbs, pansies, and Easter plants will be available for sale this weekend, plus there will be a special sale on emerging fall blooming perennials!

Greensgrow West is also a farmstand and CSA pick-up location for the Greensgrow Summer CSA program, registration for which is currently underway. Full-share, half-share and add-on share options are available. The CSA season begins the week of May 19 and ends the week of November 3.  Continue Reading

Want to help make The Woodlands more beautiful? Become a Grave Gardener

Posted on 10 February 2016 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Victorian garden

Victorian Garden at The Woodlands Center Circle (rendering).

In an effort to take The Woodlands cemetery grounds “from eternal rest to garden best,” 20 people are sought to join a newly established garden community, The Grave Gardeners, for the upcoming growing season.

Each Grave Gardener will adopt a grave in the Center Circle of the cemetery and tend to it throughout the season. All the supplies and knowledge you need will be provided, in exchange for your work. At the end of the season, you’ll get a chance to show off your plot to the rest of The Woodlands community at a Garden Fête.

The season will start with three workshops, where The Grave Gardeners will learn how to design a Victorian-style garden and how to keep it beautiful throughout the growing season. The workshops are led by local experts.

The first workshop, “Gardens (and Houses) in Graveyards,” presented by architectural historian and vice president of The Woodlands Aaron Wunsch, will be held on February 25.

So, if you have some free time this spring and summer and are not afraid to get your hands dirty, you’re welcome to fill out an application here: woodlandsphila.org/gravegardeners.

Application are accepted through Friday, Feb. 12.

Greensgrow secures new West Philly location on 5100 block of Baltimore

The urban farming hub Greensgrow Farms will likely open a bigger West Philly location next spring after agreeing to lease a large, overgrown vacant lot on the 5100 block of Baltimore Avenue.

Greensgrow came to terms with the city, namely Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, on a long-term lease for 5123-29 Baltimore Ave., known by some in the neighborhood as the “bamboo lot.” Greensgrow had originally expressed interest in a plot of land across Baltimore Avenue. That plan fell through, but the bamboo lot became available.

With a new location in place, Greensgrow now wants to figure out what neighbors want to see in the space. The organization, which is headquartered in the Kensington neighborhood and currently operates a location in the old Elena’s Soul location at 4912 Baltimore, will hold a public meeting on June 4 at 6 p.m. at the People’s Baptist Church (5039 Baltimore Ave.) to talk with neighbors.  Continue Reading

UPDATE (4/9/2014): Due to unprecedented demand, walk-ins will not be accepted at upcoming tree giveaway events, including the event at Bartram’s Garden on Saturday, April 12, according to TreePhilly Program Assistant Lindsey Walker (see comments below).

(3/19/2014): TreePhilly, a great program run by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, is back for Spring 2014 and is giving away free yard trees to city property owners. Eleven different species are available, ranging from large oaks to smaller fruit trees (all trees are six to eight feet tall). One of the giveaway events will be held in Southwest Philadelphia – at Bartram’s Garden (54th & Lindbergh Blvd.) – on Saturday, Apr. 12, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to help people select the appropriate species and learn how to plant them properly.

Interested property owners can get more information and register by visiting treephilly.org or by calling 215-683-0217. The deadline to pre-register for the spring giveaway is March 27, but walk-ins will be accepted at the event as well.

Please note that TreePhilly is focused on giving away yard trees – trees that must be planted in the ground on private property (not in the sidewalk). However, people can also get help requesting free street trees from the city, TreePhilly Program Assistant Lindsey Walker told West Philly Local via e-mail. Please contact TreePhilly for more information.

If you have questions, you can also email: treephilly@phila.gov
