UCD announces dates for popular summer events

Baltimore Avenue Dollar StrollThe University City District (UCD) has recently announced the dates for its popular summer events, from the Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll to Movies in Clark Park. Each summer, UCD partners with local businesses, restaurants, arts and culture organizations and performers to bring these fun events to community members. So mark your calendar with these dates and stay tuned for more details.

• The Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll will return on Thursday, June 5 and Thursday, Sept. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. During this unique event, Baltimore Avenue businesses and community vendors offer $1, $3, and $5 bargains between 40th and 51st Streets.

Denise King kicks off Pop-ups at the Portal May 8 at 40th & Baltimore

Pop-Ups at the Portal returns to Trolley Portal Gardens at 40th and Baltimore on Thursday, May 8. University City District (UCD) is teaming up with local performer and curator Gretchen Elise to present five weeks of free, interactive, all-ages entertainment. Pop-ups will run every Thursday from May 8 through June 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and are fair-weather only.

“Our goal with Trolley Portal Gardens is to bring programming for the neighbors, parents, and commuters who use the space every day,” said Margaret Starke, UCD’s Senior Manager of Events and Community Partnerships.

Denise King, an international jazz vocalist and recording artist, launches the series on May 8.

Saturday, April 19

Clark Park (43rd and Regent)

Renewal Church is holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt again at Clark Park on Saturday, April 19 at 11 a.m. Come for free crafts, games, face painting, and an Egg Hunt! The egg hunt is for kindergarten-age children and younger. Registration is required. See the flyer for more details.

Walnut St. West Library (40th and Walnut)

The annual Spring Egg Hunt will return this year on Saturday, April 19 at the green space on Locust Walk and 40th St. There will be two sessions for different age groups: Ages 6 & under will begin at 2 p.m.; Ages 7 to 10 will begin at 3:15 p.m. Come enjoy a spring-themed story time followed by an egg hunt and book giveaway. Maybe there will even be an Easter Bunny Sighting! Hosted by the Friends of Walnut Street West Library and local college students from Circle K (Kiwanis Club), in association with the library. Note: All the activities will be indoors in the event of rain.

Power Street Theatre launches new season of free programming, including Souletri Sundays in West Philly

Power Street Theater (PST), a celebrated organization known for showcasing multicultural artistic talent and hosting free community events, has announced a diverse roster of 2025 free programming in partnership with Esperanza Health Center, Two Locals Brewing, Theatre Philadelphia, Theatre Horizon, Izlas Latin Cuisine, Souletri, and more.

From their popular bilingual “Land and Body” adult theatre classes to their Souletri Open Mics and a brand new contemporary play reading series, PST has something for everyone. Their work brings accessible performing arts to Philadelphia neighborhoods and creates opportunities for connection, play, and healing.

Theatre in the X returns to Malcolm X Park with ‘One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show’ August 22-25

Theatre in the X, the popular all-Black theatre company, is returning with a new summer production in the park this month. From Aug. 22-25, the company will present One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show, a comedic play by the American playwright Don Evans. Set in the 1970s in Philadelphia, the play deals with the clash between middle-class and working-class African Americans. Don’t miss this show filled with laughter and drama, and featuring unforgettable performances.

The show is directed by Maureen Henighan Booker and features actors Janan Ashton, Carlo Campbell, Eric Carter, Danielle Shaw-Oglesby, Sharese Salters, Tasha Holmes, Semaja Murphy, and Davon Cochran.

All performances are free and open to everyone, just bring your own chair (BYOC!). Tickets can be reserved here.

Movies in Clark Park kicks off this Friday with Men in Black

Free outdoor movies will return to Clark Park next month when University City District (UCD) will present three popular film screenings on Friday nights. The annual program kicks off this Friday, Aug. 2 with a screening of a Hollywood classic, Men in Black.

On Friday, Aug. 9, UCD will present last year’s summer smash, Barbie. Finally, on August 16, don’t miss the screening of the 2023 family musical, Wonka.

All movies are shown at sundown (approximately 8:15 p.m.) during fair weather and with dry ground conditions. In case a screening has to be postponed, Saturday, Aug. 17 has been reserved as rain date. Please follow UCD on X, Facebook, or Instagram for updates.
