BalletX, Philadelphia’s premier contemporary ballet, returns to TD Pavilion at the Mann for two extraordinary nights of dance and live music – on April 26-27.

This year’s Festival at the Mann features works by Natasha Adorlee, Takehiro Ueyama, and Jamar Roberts, with live music by Grammy-nominated singer Jac Ross, composer Kato Hideki, and ensemble132!

Arrive early and enjoy pre-show festivities featuring local dance groups, live musicians, and circus acts.

New fitness studio opens near 43rd and Locust; grand opening/fundraiser for asylum-seeking family this Saturday

A new movement and wellness studio, EveryBody Movement and Wellness, is officially opening next week at 4305 Locust Street, a space across from CVS.

Starting Monday, Oct. 7, EveryBody Movement and Wellness will offer a wide range of small group movement classes including Pilates, suspension training, high-intensity interval training, yoga, kettlebells, Barre, dance, and more. People of all sizes, ages, genders, and abilities are welcome. In addition to group classes in the main studio space, there is also a private Pilates room and a wellness room that is being used for a variety of mind-body modalities (massage, reiki, therapy, etc). Get free tickets to Soul Farm Community Festival this Saturday (Rain date: Sunday, Oct. 15)

Everyone is invited to a free, 7-hour long community festival, Soul Farm, this Saturday (Oct. 14) to celebrate “the rich arts, culture, and community along Lancaster Avenue and throughout West Philadelphia.” The festival is a closing celebration of LoLa 38, a creative placemaking collaboration that has been encouraging civic conversation through art installations and community gatherings throughout the year.

Thanks to LoLa 38, two Lower Lancaster Avenue properties undergoing transformation – the former United Bank building and the site of the former University City High School building – were adorned with art pieces created by local artists from May to September.

The festival will take place from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 225 N. 38th St. (LAZ Parking Lot) and will feature local food, art, and music and dance performances.  Continue Reading

From West Philly to West Africa: Dance workshop with choreographer Anssumane Sillá this Saturday

Dancer and choreographer Anssumane Sillá was born and raised in Guinea Bissau and moved to Philadelphia in 2008.

A distinguished African-born dancer, drummer and choreographer, Anssumane Sillá, will offer a West African dance workshop this Saturday (March 25) at The Children’s Community School (1212 S. 47th St).

Sillá, a Guinea Bissau native, began performing at the age of 11 and danced professionally with the National Ballet of Guinea Bissau for almost 20 years. He moved to Philadelphia in 2008 and since then has toured the U.S. with the Voices of Africa Drum Ensemble, choreographed for the Kùlú Mèlé African Dance Ensemble, and taught numerous workshops and classes on both traditional West African and contemporary dance styles.  Continue Reading

Fringe Festival kicks off Sept 9: Check out West Philly events; support West Philly artists

FringeArtsphotoThe annual celebration of Philly arts and artists, The Fringe Festival, will be held from Sept. 9 through Sept. 24. This year, the festival has expanded its reach and is presenting an array of outstanding contemporary theater, music, dance and other performances at city-wide locations, including many events in West Philadelphia.

West Philly Square Dance reborn; “Last Friday” Dance tonight

Do you like Square Dance and want to have some fun tonight? Then read on. The newly-reborn West Philly Square Dance (Facebook page) has been going strong for a few months, according to organizers, and tonight all are invited to St. Mary’s Church on Locust Walk (near 40th and Locust) for the “Last Friday” Dance.

People of all ages are welcome and no experience is needed as all dances will be taught. Admission is $5-$10 sliding scale. Also, please bring a vessel/bottle/cup etc. to use for water because square dancing is exercise!  Continue Reading
