Four people found shot to death in Cedar Park (updated)

UPDATE (Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018): Police are still investigating the murder of four people, two men and two women, whose bodies were found Monday afternoon in the basement of a residence on the 5100 block of Malcolm Street in Cedar Park. All four were shot once in the head, according to police. The male victims, 28 and 31 years old, are reportedly cousins. One of the female victims is 20 years old, according to police. No names and no suspect information have been released as of 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Philadelphia Police Captain Derrick Wood tweeted shortly after the discovery of the victims that “it [was] the worst crime scene I have seen in my 20 years with the Philadelphia Police Department”:  Continue Reading

Several West Philly businesses wake up to smashed windows, burglary this morning (updated)

Storefront windows of several West Philly businesses were smashed overnight and some businesses were burglarized, prompting a burglary report from the 18th Police District (see below).

The Green Line Cafe posted the following message on their Facebook page this morning:

Not what we wanted to wake up to at Locust Street this morning… No one was hurt. We’ll be opening late today, though.”  Continue Reading

Police looking for suspects in Aksum restaurant burglary

Police are looking for three male suspects in connection with a burglary at Aksum restaurant at 4630 Baltimore Ave. that happened in the early morning hours on Sunday, Aug. 12. One suspect entered the restaurant after breaking the front window with an object. He took cash and several electronic devices from the restaurant and passed them on to the other men who were waiting outside, according to police.

Police released surveillance video of the burglary where the suspects can be seen outside and inside the restaurant during the burglary (see below).  Continue Reading

$20,000 reward offered in search of driver involved in fatal hit-and-run on Lancaster Ave

Police are now offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest of the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run last month in West Philadelphia. Kenneth Whiters, 61, was struck on Lancaster Avenue near Aspen Street on July 22 at 3:14 a.m. by a vehicle, believed to be a Mazda 3 hatchback, that was traveling at a high speed west on Lancaster Avenue from Fairmount Street. The car fled the scene after the accident.

Vehicle sought in fatal hit-and-run on Lancaster Avenue

Police have released surveillance video (see below) and are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run in West Philadelphia over the weekend. The victim, a 61-year-old man, was struck near Lancaster Avenue and Aspen Street on Sunday, July 22, at 3:14 a.m. The vehicle that struck him was traveling at a high speed west on Lancaster Avenue from Fairmount Street and fled the scene after the accident.

The victim was found lying in the bicycle lane by officers patrolling the area and was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he later died.  Continue Reading

Suspect charged in hit-and-run death of 5-year-old West Philly boy

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced charges against the person allegedly responsible for the hit and run accident that killed 5-year old Xavier Moy in the Walnut Hill neighborhood two weeks ago. The accident happened on Friday, June 22 at approximately 4:07 p.m. on the 5000 block of Irving Street. Twenty-five-year-old Anissa Thompson surrendered to authorities on Thursday morning and was charged later that day. The charges include homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and fleeing the scene of an accident, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Xavier was struck by the car while playing in the street. He was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in critical condition and died about an hour later.

The bail  has been set at $500,000.
