Loose dogs spotted on 48th and Cedar (updated)

Two loose dogs, a hound mix and a chow mix, were spotted Tuesday morning, around 8:45 a.m., near 48th and Cedar. They were slowly trotting west on Cedar. The dogs looked “pretty thin and unkempt and appeared to be scavenging for trash,” according to a reader who saw them.

UPDATE (10:50 a.m.): ACCT Philly has been notified about these dogs. If anyone spots them again please call 267-385-3800 immediately, so that an Animal Control officer can try to locate them. Also, please read this page on what to do if you find a pet.

Three men wounded in overnight shootings on 51st/Springfield, 54th/Pine

crimeThree men are in stable condition following two shootings in the area last night, according to various reports.

A 55-year-old man was shot in the leg shortly after 11 p.m. on Sunday, Guncrisis.org reported. The shooting took place near 54th and Pine streets when a bar fight between two men escalated, according to Joe Murray of Southwest Detectives. A male was taken into custody and the weapon was recovered by the police. The victim was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was listed in stable condition.

Two young men, ages 20 and 21, were shot at about 11:45 p.m. inside a home on Springfield Ave near 51st Street, according to reports. One man was shot in the back and the other in the leg. One of the victims was able to run outside and get help, NBC10 reports. Both men were listed in stable condition at HUP. The incident is still being investigated and unidentified local youths are sought in this shooting, according to a police source.

House fire in Cedar Park neighborhood (updated)

A house fire was reported in the Cedar Park neighborhood on Saturday, around 7 p.m.. A house on 48th Street between Baltimore and Cedar Avenues was engulfed in smoke. Multiple fire trucks and lots of firefighters responded to the fire that was shortly taken under control. The building was still smoking and it looked like it may have suffered serious damage, according to one West Philly Local reader.

UPDATE (3/31/2014): The fire was at a three-story twin at 615 S. 48th St. It was reported at 7 p.m. and brought under control in 27 minutes at about 7:30 p.m., according to a fire department spokesman. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

‘Eats and Beats’ dinner to support local youth nutrition program

The wonderful young folks from the Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative (AUNI), a school-based program of the University of Pennsylvania’s Netter Center for Community Partnerships, are hosting a delicious fundraiser on Saturday, March 29. The annual Eats and Beats community dinner is an event that showcases youth leadership and skills and also helps raise funds for AUNI’s High School Internship Program.

West Philly Local wrote about AUNI’s youth efforts to grow and sell organic food in West Philadelphia. AUNI also offers healthy cooking lessons to high-school students and older community members and teaches how to tend to school gardens and operate farmers markets and CSAs.

Eats and Beats serves a locally sourced, 4-course organic meal prepared and grown by youth interns, featuring ingredients from local farms, restaurants and businesses, including Bon Appetit, Franklin Fountain, Guacamole, Milk and Honey, Lancaster Farm Fresh, John and Kira’s Chocolates, Little Baby’s Ice Cream, Pure Fare and Tara’s Catering. The event will also include live entertainment and speakers, a silent auction and raffle with gift certificates to restaurants, yoga, fitness and cooking classes, and locally-made arts and crafts.

The event will take place at the Mantua Haverford Community Center (631 N. 39th Street) from 5:30-8:30 p.m.. Suggested minimum donation is $25. Click here for more information and to RSVP.

Smooth hip hop outta West Philly

We dig this song and newly released video, “Walk It Off,” by West Philly’s indie hip hop artist and emcee Sterling Duns (Facebook page). A part of the vid was filmed on Hazel Avenue, according to the musician.

Sterling Duns describes himself as an instrumentalist, poet, hip-hop artist, comedy improviser, and astronaut enthusiast!

Greensgrow West to open Thursday, April 3

Community members are invited to check out the newest location of the urban farming hub Greensgrow Farms beginning Thursday, April 3. The opening party will be on Saturday, April 5!

Last month, we wrote about Greensgrow Farms’ plans to open a West Philly location at 4912 Baltimore Avenue, the former home of Elena’s Soul Bar & Lounge destroyed by fire in December 2012.

Greensgrow West will include a garden center featuring veggie starts, soils, tools, annuals and perennials, fruit trees, and expert help. The new location will also have a seasonal farmstand and CSA pick-up every Friday. Finally, Greensgrow West is planning to offer educational workshops for the community.

Greensgrow West hours, starting April 3, will be:

Garden Center: Thursday-Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
CSA Pick-up & Farmstand: Fridays 3:00-6:00 p.m.
