The Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll is returning this week. The popular West Philly event, which is now held only once a year, will take place on Thursday (Sept. 8), 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. As always, this is a great chance for local businesses to showcase their signature products and for locals to enjoy $1 samples and deals. Well-known businesses, as well as newcomers will participate in the event (about 40 businesses overall).

Here’s what you should look for: $1 samples of everything from samosas to slices of pizza, cheesesteaks, ice cream and small pours of beer, but also highlights businesses offering pet supplies, children’s clothes and toys, handmade items, plants, and more. Vendors line the sidewalks and people are encouraged to walk up and down the avenue between 43rd and 52nd Streets sampling all sorts of food and drinks.

The Dollar Stroll will also feature street performers and live music.

The goal of the Dollar Stroll is to celebrate established businesses on Baltimore Avenue while introducing visitors to new stores and restaurants, such as Black Hound Clay Studio, Amari’s restaurant, Vital Step Physical Therapy & Fitness, and more.

The event is organized by the University City District (UCD) and Baltimore Avenue Business Association (BABA).

More than 20 West Philly-based barbers will be at the West Philadelphia branch of YMCA this Sunday (Sept. 4) to provide free haircuts for youths as they prepare for the upcoming school year. This is the 2nd annual “Back 2 School” free hair-cutting event organized by the local group “Barbers Who Care.”

The event will run from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and will also include child friendly activities, music, and special guests. West Philly YMCA is located at 5120 Chestnut Street.

Dozens received free haircuts at last year’s event.

SEPTA has announced extra trips on subways, trolleys and additional service on several regional rail lines to accommodate those going to and from Made in America concert, which will be held on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 3 & 4). Service on the Broad Street and Market-Frankford Lines will operate on regular Saturday/Sunday schedules, with extra trains added for the festival.

SEPTA’s Center City trolley tunnel, which normally closes on Sunday evenings, will remain open to accommodate passengers on the Route 10, 11, 13, 34 and 36 trolleys. Trolleys will operate on Saturday/Sunday schedules during the festival.

On Monday, Sept. 5, SEPTA will operate on a Sunday/Holiday schedule. For more information, visit septa.org.

And here are some closings and schedules changes in observance of Labor Day:

• Philadelphia public libraries will close at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2 and will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
• There will be no trash or recyclables collection on Monday, Sept. 5. Residents with Monday collections must set their trash out on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Collections will be one day behind for the rest of the week.

Just a week before Philadelphia public schools reopen for the 2016-2017 school year, a number of local businesses and organizations are holding school supply drives.

• PB & Jams PHL and Sofistifunk are hosting The Back to School Jawn on Wednesday, Aug 31, from 6 – 9 p.m. The event will take place in Cedar Park at the Taco Angeleno location (5019 Baltimore Ave.). Please bring some new school supplies for neighborhood kids heading back to school, and enjoy tacos and nachos from Taco Angeleno, sweet treats and shakes prepared by PB&Jams, and music by Sofistifunk. • Philadelphia Forman Mills stores, including the 48th and Market location, will be collecting school supplies for the 6ABC “Stuff a Backpack” Drive through Wednesday, Aug. 31. There will be a collection bin at each participating Forman Mills location. Suggested donation items include: number 2 pencils, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, glue and glue sticks, markers (thin and thick), pen/pencil pouches, folders, child scissors. Items must be new and unused. Many local PNC Bank customers will be disappointed to learn that the bank’s 52nd Street branch is set to close this fall. The branch, which is located at 19 S. 52nd St, will close on October 21 at 3 p.m.:

The bank has two more branches west of the Schuylkill – at 200 S. 40th St. and 3535 Market St. – and numerous ATMs east of 40th St (most of them on Penn’s campus). There is also a PNC bank ATM at 6212 Walnut St. (Photo by Twitter user @ohbadiah)

UCD’s annual outdoor movie program, Movies in Clark Park, will kick off Friday, Aug. 26 with a Disney Pixar classic, Finding Nemo. The screening will begin at 8 p.m. in the Clark Park “Bowl” near 43rd and Chester.

The program, which is in partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and Friends of Clark Park, will bring three weeks of free outdoor movies to the park as well as vendors offering food and dessert (come earlier to get them!). And don’t forget to bring your blanket or chairs.

Next Friday, Sept. 2, Creed will be screened. The program will conclude on Friday, Sept. 9 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
