While ArtPhilly’s What Now: 2026 festival wrapped up earlier this summer, the celebration of local art and storytelling continues this fall in West Philadelphia.
ArtPhilly is presenting The Becoming, an interdisciplinary project created by artist Shavon Norris. Originally scheduled to run during the main festival, the postponed project will take place from September 30 through October 4 at the Painted Bride Project Space (4029 Cambridge Street).
Rooted in memory, storytelling, embodiment, and collective care, The Becoming invites audiences to explore themes of Black girlhood, adulthood, ritual, and lived experience. The multi-faceted work combines movement, installation, testimony, and participatory exchange, offering both passive viewing and immersive engagement.
Visitors can experience The Becoming through open gallery hours or ticketed live performances:
Open Gallery Hours: Wednesday, Sept. 30 – Sunday, Oct. 4, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. No ticket required; walk-ins are welcome.
Friday, Oct. 2: 7 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 3: 7 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 4: 3 p.m.
