SEPTA’s new bus network launches Sunday: Key changes for West Philly and University City

August 19, 2026

Phase 1 of SEPTA’s New Bus Network Initiative (formerly Bus Revolution) kicks off Sunday, Aug. 23. For West Philadelphia and University City commuters, several key routes will see modified alignments, route truncations, and frequency upgrades.

Here is a breakdown of what West Philly riders need to know:

Key Route Changes & Adjustments

Route 49 will no longer travel into South Philadelphia and will now terminate at 40th Street & Woodland Avenue (Trolley Portal). Additionally, its Center City route shifts from 20th Street to 22nd Street.

• To maintain the connection between South and West Philadelphia previously covered by Route 49, Route 79 has been extended across the river through Grays Ferry and into University City, terminating at the 40th Street Station (Market-Frankford Line) on every other trip.

Route 52 will no longer extend into Gladwyne.

Frequency & Service Upgrades

• All Route 64 trips will now run the full route to Parkside Loop (no longer short-turning at 49th & Woodland). Service frequency will increase to every 12 minutes during morning peak hours (6 a.m.–9 a.m.) and every 15 minutes during midday and evening hours, making it a high-frequency route.

Please note that no West Philly routes are being eliminated in Phase 1. Route 30 is slated for elimination in Phase 2 (February 2027).

Maps and schedule data on the SEPTA App, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Transit will update automatically on Sunday. Test your updated routes ahead of time using SEPTA’s digital Phase 1 Trip Planner.
