UPDATE (1/10/2026): SEPTA’s Trolley Tunnel (“T Trolley Tunnel”), which has been closed since mid-November, is set to reopen on Monday, Jan. 12 for regular daytime service, according to SEPTA. The tunnel will still be closed indefinitely from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night to accommodate additional inspections and maintenance. All trolleys will be diverted to 40th and Market during these hours. The tunnel will also be closed for additional repairs during the following periods:

• From 10 p.m. on Jan. 23 to 5 a.m. on Jan. 26
• From 10 p.m. on Jan. 30 to 5 a.m. on Feb. 2
• From 5 a.m. on Feb. 15 to 10 p.m. on Feb. 22

Please note that the T Shuttle Bus currently operating between 40th and Market and 15th and Market will be discontinued starting Monday morning, but will run during the tunnel closure periods listed above.

“We thank you for your patience during this extended outage and sincerely apologize for the disruption that it has caused,” reads SEPTA’s message posted on Jan. 9.

1/4/2026: SEPTA has completed repairs in the Trolley Tunnel and began running test trolleys yesterday, according to a recent announcement. The tunnel, which has been closed since mid-November due to overhead wire problems, is now expected to re-open in mid-January. The exact date has not been announced yet as it depends on the completion of testing, according to SEPTA.

Several test trolleys were operating in the tunnel near the 40th Street Trolley Portal and heading west on Woodland Ave (see photo).

While the tunnel remains closed, trolleys will be diverted to 40th and Market, where passengers can board the L train or a T Shuttle Bus running along Market Street between 40th and 15th.

hasn’t the overhead wires been a part of every recent pre-planned shut down for every year? Good work SEPTA, I hope you can bill this to the Feds
