Annual ‘Trolley Tunnel Blitz’ scheduled to begin July 7

June 22, 2023

SEPTA Trolley Tunnel, which connects West Philadelphia with Center City, will be closed for the annual maintenance from July 7 through July 24 for the annual “Trolley Tunnel Blitz.”

The tunnel closure will impact trolley routes 10, 11, 13, 34 and 36, all of which will temporarily divert to 40th and Market, where riders can transfer to/from the Market-Frankford Line to continue their travel.

A temporary shelter will be set up for riders switching to/from the Market-Frankford Line. The trolley diversion map is available here.

Trolley Route 13 will operate as a bus during the Trolley Blitz.

Here are the improvements that SEPTA is planning to get done during the Blitz:

• Demolish and rebuild the full length of the eastbound 22nd Street platform, rebuild the entire track bed and pour new concrete decking;
• Replace worn track curved rail at various locations; clean out/flush all pipes, drains, vent wells; replace 4 miles of overhead contact wire;
• Heavy maintenance on Ludlow Switch; test and maintenance of the entire Tunnel signal system.

SEPTA workers will also carry out heavy cleaning at all stations.

This year’s project will allow SEPTA to prepare for the multi-year Trolley Modernization project, whose construction phase is expected to begin in 2024.
