The West Philly Tool Library, which is currently in the process of moving out of its long-term location on south 47th Street, has announced its new home. Unfortunately, the non-profit organization, which had to find a new location because its lease on S. 47th Street had not been renewed, is not going to be located in West Philly anymore. It’s moving southeast to Grays Ferry. The good news is that their new location at 1223 S Harmony St is only 0.7 miles away from their previous location.
Moving out of West Philly was not an easy decision for the Tool Library folks.
“We tried our best to stay inĀ West and as close as possible to our long-time community,” a note to members reads.
“We had looked at 35 different locations throughout West Philly for our new home. Some less than 1,000 [square feet]. Others were much bigger and/or very unaffordable for our small organization… After many dead ends and setbacks, we needed to compromise to avoid an extended or indefinite closure.”
The organization, which permanently closed its doors on S. 47th St at the beginning of this month, has announced that it is still planning to reopen by Monday, Dec. 1 at the new location. Help is still needed during the moving process.
“While monetary donations are greatly appreciated, there are many other ways you can help us. In 2025, we have grown to over 1,300 members with over 5,000 tools and will need volunteers to help us organize, pack, move (and unpack) all of our tools at the new location. We will also need construction materials like drywall, Romex, fasteners, etc.”
