Protected bike lane construction to begin as part of the Safe Spaces for Cycling Project

Construction work will begin on the Safe Spaces for Cycling Project, starting the week of April 26th (weather permitting), according to today’s announcement by Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams.

The project involves the upgrading or reconfiguring bike lanes with the installation of pavement markings, flexible delineator posts, and bike lane related signage.

The following streets in West Philadelphia are included within the scope of this project:

• Parkside Avenue from Girard Ave to 52nd St.

A two-way parking protected bike lane with turn lanes at intersections will be installed on Parkside Avenue from 41st Street to 51st Street.

Protected bike lanes will also be installed on the following streets in Center City:

• 2nd Street from Spring Garden St to Race St.
• 5th Street from Arch St to Race St.
• 5th Street from Callowhill St to Spring Garden St.
• 6th Street from Spring Garden St to Market St.
• 10th Street from Spring Garden St to Winter St.

Work is expected to occur during daytime hours using single lane closures.

The $500,000 project is being funded with a combination of Federal and City funds.

Construction of the entire project is expected to be completed by early Summer of 2021.
