West Philly Action Fair hopes to connect neighbors with community organizations

April 28, 2017

The West Philly Community Action Fair will be held this Saturday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. on the second floor of the Kingsessing Recreation Center (4901 Kingsessing Avenue). The event’s goals include connecting neighbors to the many organizations with a presence in West Philadelphia and, ultimately, to make a difference in each other’s lives.

“For some of us, it’s been difficult to find the groups that are committed to making a difference in the area,” explains Ryan Draving, one of the event organizers. “We want to help other people like us to get involved in making the neighborhood a better place or contribute in some way.”

The following 27 organizations will be tabling: Adult Literacy Xprize, Bartram’s Garden, Caucus of Working Educators, Cedar Park Neighbors, Children’s Pavilion, Community Solutions CDC, Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, Equality Coalition, Fair Districts PA, Kingsessing Roadrunners, Media Mobilizing Project, Neighborhood Bike Works, Never Too Late to Read, Philadelphia United for Progress, Philly THRIVE, Philly Socialists, Reclaim Philadelphia, Repair The World: Philadelphia, Resources West Philly, Science Education Academy, Inc., Sister’s For Motivation, Socialist Alternative, Teacher Action Group, the Puzzlement Laboratory, the Walk to Make America Love Again, TIIA/Gateway to ReEntry, Walnut Hill Community Association, West Philly Coalition Against Islamophobia.

There was a similar event back in December, and there will be another event of its kind again this coming September.

“Some of the people who came to [December’s event] wanted to help organize another one,” Draving adds.

In addition to himself, a diverse group of community leaders (including a teacher, social worker, musician, marketer, and activists) helped organize this weekend’s event.
