New music venue to rock West Philly

As the state of music venues in West Philly stands, house shows reign supreme while The Rotunda and World Cafe Live are really the only two music venues in this part of town. Unlike in Callowhill and Center City, there are few choices for local musicians and touring acts to play in West Philly.

Here’s where Live! at William Street Common comes in. When the restaurant opened a little under a year ago at 3900 Chestnut Street, it was focused on pioneering their “flat pricing” concept. Since then, the communal dining restaurant and bar cut down on business hours and invited event management company REC Philly to spearhead its music series. The company also manages events at the Screening Room in Manayunk.

What’s the plan for this space in particular?

“My strategy is to market the space and host as many high-quality events as possible,” said REC Philly event manager Mike Matthews. The company plans on staffing the space for shows and give bands access to their PA system, coat check, WSC’s kitchen staff and security as well.

The restaurant will still maintain its own catering offerings but REC Philly has taken over the music event aspect of the space. The contract was signed back in August. Matthews mentioned that the company was interested in booking local bands as well.

So West Philly bands, which one of you will be the first to make it onto the Live! at WSC stage?

@Nb that’s fair, even though WCL is further on the edge of West Philly, it should’ve been included.

What about Calvary Center for Culture and Community at 48th St. and Baltimore Avenue? Crossroads Music presents music from different cultures in approximately 20 concerts a year there. The names of artists for the Winter concerts, scheduled between January 29 and March 18, have just been posted. There will be a Spring series as well. Also several free children’s concerts. http://www.crossroadsconcerts.org
