Second teen suspect apprehended in El shooting

December 29, 2012

Police last night apprehended the teen suspected of shooting two men at the 46th Street El stop earlier this month.

Matthew Early, 18, was taken into custody in a friend’s home on the 1700 block of N. 27th St. at about 6 p.m. on Friday, police said. Police apprehended his brother, 17-year-old Eric Early, on Dec. 16. Both brothers live on the 100 block of S. 49th St.

Both teens were on the run after they were named as suspects shown in surveillance video firing a single shot into a train car on Dec. 12 following an argument with a Chicago Bulls fan returning home from the Bulls-Sixers game earlier that night. One man was shot through the stomach and a man standing behind him was hit with the same bullet in the leg.

Police say Matthew Early was the shooter. Both brothers have been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. Eric Early has been charged as an adult, police said.

ok. so what these guys did was terrible. but you cant charge two people with attempted murder for firing one gun.

  2. b Says:

@a – sure you can. And they did.

  3. anonymous Says:

The younger brother who did NOT have or shoot the gun is being charged as an adult? Why isn’t the shooter being charged as an adult since he fired the gun and IS an adult? Error in reporting?

  4. Adam Says:

More like “not state the obvious reporting”. At 18, the older brother will of course be tried as an adult. The younger brother is also. Does that help?

  5. King Cheetah Says:

I agree with “a”, I don’t know how the younger brother is charged with this. I expect his lawyer will have that charge reduced.

  6. Tim Says:

    “A” is for “Accomplice.”

@anonymous & @Adam, Cut this blog some slack. It’s not reporting if there is no byline. We can’t expect the same standards from an anon post that we would from a newspaper. At least we are getting some info. Thanks for that!

  8. Editor Says:

@Jessie Thanks, but we like to think we have higher standards than a newspaper. Our byline is here: https://www.westphillylocal.com/about/ . We’ll take the Pepsi Challenge against a newspaper any day of the week.

I agree, there are some great standards on this blog, but anonymously written articles are silly. How credible is something without an author’s name?

  10. Tim Says:

How credible is a comment by “E”?

@E if you click on the link Editor posted you’ll see that there are two writers for this site – Jen and Kelly. One of them even recently found herself in journalism. Also, one if the publishers used to be a journalist, so that’s worth something. Still, I agree it would be nice to know who is writing which blog posts. And I just Googled “Pepsi Challenge.” Great stuff!
