Film Forward to bring a critically-acclaimed film screening, workshop to West Philly this weekend

Posted on 11 April 2014 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Film Forward, a program of the Sundance Institute designed to enhance greater cultural understanding and collaboration, is bringing a couple of free events to West Philly this weekend.

Wynnefield Library (5325 Overbrook Avenue) will host a screening of the recent Academy Award winning documentary Twenty Feet From Stardom on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. The film is about people whose voices are familiar to millions of people, but no one knows their names – backup singers behind some of the greatest musical acts of the 21st century. The screening will be followed by a discussion.

On Sunday, April 13, also at 1 p.m., International House Philadelphia presents The Intersection of Film and Music, a workshop produced in partnership with Film Forward. The workshop explores the many roles music can play in the filmmaking process, how music can enhance or ruin a film, and many other questions related to the creative process of integrating music and filmmaking.

The documentary If You Build It will be used as a case study during the workshop. Peter Golub, Director of the Sundance Film Music Program and composer, and producer Christine O’Malley will discuss the film and its music. If You Build It charts the course of a year in the life of one of America’s most innovative classrooms. Go to ihousephilly.org for more information.

Free Street Smarts & Self-Defense training at Studio 34 (tonight and Oct 30)

Posted on 16 October 2013 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Knowing what to do and what to expect in some potentially dangerous circumstances on the street can help keep you safe. Here’s a great chance to get some self-defense training.

Community members of all races, backgrounds, orientations, and income levels are invited to attend one or both of the Street Smarts, Safety, and Self-Defense workshops presented by neighbor Iris Marie Bloom tonight and October 30. Both workshops are at Studio 34 (4522 Baltimore Ave) from 6:00 to 7:45 p.m and are free (donations are appreciated).

Here’s what you can learn at each of these sessions:

• Skills and techniques to help you avoid, deter and resist assault
• Practice giving up “mugger money” as one way to stay safer
• A fierce yell — in case it’s needed!
• Strong stance, practical assessment of danger, and a “don’t mess with me” attitude
• Effective and practical tools for physical, verbal and emotional safety, assertiveness and self-defense

Iris Marie Bloom studied with Amulis Women’s Self-Defense where she learned karate, aikido, and other martial arts. She’s a founder of the Women’s Anti-Violence Education (WAVE) nonprofit organization.

This workshop was specifically designed for women, but the information is useful for men as well. For more information and to RSVP, email Patty Bulack of the 48th Street Neighbors at pbulack@gmail.com.
