City’s Christmas Tree Recycling program underway (Jan. 2-13)

The City’s annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program, which provides residents with an environmentally friendly alternative for the disposal of live trees, has kicked off today and will run through Saturday, Jan. 13. Residents of West and Southwest Philadelphia who wish to drop off their trees to be recycled may take them to the Sanitation Convenience Centers listed below open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday:

• 3033 S. 63rd Street

• 5100 Grays Avenue

Residents may also drop their trees off at 13 designated locations on Saturdays, Jan. 6 and Jan. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The two locations in West Philly are:

• 54th St. and Woodbine Ave.

• 43rd St. and Powelton Ave.

Holiday tree recycling events in West Philly parks

UC Green, the West Philly community greening organization, is again hosting holiday tree recycling events in two West Philly parks – Clark Park and Malcolm X Park. Both events will be held Saturday, Jan. 8 (check out the flier below for more details). Suggested donation is $5-$20 per tree. Recycled trees will be mulched and used in local parks.

Recycle your Christmas tree with UC Green this Sunday in Clark Park or Malcolm X. Park

UC Green, the West Philly community greening organization, is teaming up with Treeken LLC, a local arborist tree care company, to offer holiday tree collection on Sunday, Jan. 10 at Clark Park and Malcolm X Park. Tree collection in Clark Park (43rd and Kingsessing) will be held from 9 a.m. until Noon and in Malcolm X Park (51st and Osage) from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

UC Green is a volunteer-run organization with a 20-year history, so please bring a donation ($5-$20) along with your tree to support this organization. Donations are also accepted online at https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/ucgreenphila.

Collected trees will be mulched and used at local parks. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, please make sure to wear a mask and avoid congregating with others when dropping off your tree.

Christmas tree recycling opportunities starting January 4th (updated)

If you want to dispose of your Christmas tree in an environmentally friendly way, there are a few options.

The City’s Streets Department is again offering its free Christmas Tree Recycling Program. From Monday, Jan. 4 through Saturday, Jan. 16 residents can drop off their trees (free of all decorations and untied) to any of the six Sanitation Convenience Centers open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The West Philadelphia center is located at 5100 Grays Avenue.

Residents can also drop off Christmas trees on Saturdays, Jan. 9 and Jan. 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at an additional 13 designated locations throughout the City. In West Philadelphia these locations are 43rd and Powelton Ave. and 54th and Woodbine Ave.  Continue Reading

Bid on local gifts and help local non-profit to plant trees, clean up blocks

UC Green, the non-profit known for planting trees in West Philly neighborhoods, is holding a virtual auction this weekend to raise funds for projects scheduled for this fall.

The auction will be live on Instagram from 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20 to 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21.

Community members are invited to bid on unique works of art from local makers – from jewelry to ceramic planters to original artwork by local artists. Special experiences like a catered socially distant ice cream party from Zsa’s Ice Cream will be also included in the offerings. UC Green accepting applications for free street trees

UC Green, the non-profit community greening organization serving West Philadelphia zip codes 19143, 19139 and 19104, is accepting applications from property owners (residents or organizations) for a free street tree through Tuesday, May 5. Trees will be planted in November 2020.

UC Green is encouraging residents to plant a tree as a great way to invest in the future of their neighborhood. UC Green’s services include cutting cement for tree pits where needed, facilitating the city permitting process, procuring 4-to-6-foot-tall saplings, planting the trees with community volunteers, and supporting tree care and maintenance at no cost to the applicant.
