Woodland Avenue safety improvements coming soon; Join project pop-up event next Thursday (updated)

Posted on 07 June 2023 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Streetscape improvements are in the works for Woodland Avenue between 40th and 42nd streets, and next Thursday, June 15, community members are invited to meet the design team, share thoughts and ask questions (the event has been rescheduled from June 8 due to the hazardous air pollution in Philadelphia). The Woodland Avenue Complete Streets Project pop-up event, organized by Vision Zero, will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Woodlands Cemetery front gates at 40th and Woodland (see the event flyer below).

Streetscape improvements are a part of a larger reconstruction project along Woodland Avenue between 39th and 42nd streets. Some safety improvements, like traffic lights and crosswalks, are expected to be installed at the section of Woodland Avenue near The Woodlands cemetery and the intersection with Chester Avenue later this year. Traffic lights, crosswalks coming to Woodland Ave near The Woodlands

The two plans under consideration for Woodland Avenue near the intersection with Chester Avenue and down to 42nd Street.

Traffic lights and crosswalks are coming to the section of Woodland Avenue near The Woodlands cemetery and the intersection with Chester Avenue.

Visitors to The Woodlands know that crossing Woodland Avenue at the awkward intersection at Chester or the trolley portal can get a little dicey. But a new plan unveiled last night at a Spruce Hill Community Association (SHCA) meeting will slow traffic along Woodland and close down the little section of 41st Street that often baffles drivers and pedestrians alike.

“The whole project is about user safety, whether you’re a pedestrian, a cyclist or a driver,” Julie Bush of the landscape architecture firm Ground Reconsidered told the SHCA board. Continue Reading

Safety improvements coming to Woodland Ave. near Chester and Trolley Portal

Long-needed safety improvements are coming soon to Woodland Avenue.

Woodland Avenue, and especially the portion between 41st Street and VA Medical Center driveway, is one of the most dangerous roads in the city. Between 2017 and 2021, 13 crashes involving 49 people were reported in that part of the road, with 27 people injured.

Pedestrians and cyclists trying to cross near SEPTA’s 40th Street Trolley Portal and enter The Woodlands currently have to dash across Woodland Avenue and hope for the best. Same goes for the awkward intersection of Chester Ave and Woodland Avenue.

In fact, it can be so treacherous at times along Woodland that the City added the street to the High Injury Network of Vision Zero, the program to eliminate traffic-related deaths by 2030. Continue Reading

Trolley tunnel maintenance project underway; Woodland Ave near 40th closed to traffic

Posted on 14 August 2019 by WestPhillyLocal.com

In case you hadn’t noticed, the annual SEPTA trolley tunnel maintenance project, Trolley Tunnel Blitz, began on Friday night, which means all trolleys are being temporarily diverted to 40th and Market via 42nd and Spruce Streets. Passengers can transfer to the Market-Frankford line at no additional cost at 40th and Market to continue their travel. The “blitz” also includes trolley track repairs on Woodland Avenue near the trolley portal, and due to this project, a portion of Woodland Avenue, between Woodland Terrace and University Avenue, is closed to through traffic.

The trolley tunnel will stay closed throughout this week and is expected to reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19.

Pizza lovers of the west rejoice, we now have more options. Noah’s Pizza just opened next to Lil’ Pop Shop at 4602 Woodland Ave. Now we’re quite aware of the shortage of quality pizza on our side of the river, but this is exactly why owner Mekonen Hailu decided to transition his previous business, Noah’s Market, into what is now Noah’s Pizza.

The pizza shop opened about a couple of weeks ago, with the idea to provide quality pizza to the neighborhood. “There is more need for pizza than a mini market here,” said Hailu.

The pizza chef? Sal Traina, he’s the executive chef at Chestnut Hill Hospital. He’s really good friends with Hailu and well, he loves making pizza, so he decided to add a side gig to his work week. “I wanted to help out a friend,” said Traina.  Continue Reading
