Roaming raccoon bites resident after attacking a cat near 44th and Pine

Here’s an alert to the residents in the area of 44th and Pine Streets.

A person went to the emergency room for treatment this morning after being bitten by a large, possibly rabid raccoon, according to a neighbor report. The attack happened this morning in the backyard of a home on the South side of Pine, closer to 44th, according to an email sent by a neighbor and local animal/pet advocate, Linda Lee, to the UCNeighbors listserv.

New affordable housing development to replace empty lot at 55th and Haverford

The Women’s Community Revitalization Project (WCRP) has recently broken ground on its newest affordable housing development, the Linda Lockman King apartments. The four-story multifamily building will replace an empty lot at 5500 Haverford Ave. and will offer 33 affordable rental units to low-income Philadelphians.

The new apartment building will consist of four one-bedroom apartments, 19 two-bedroom apartments, and 10 three-bedroom apartments, all with in-unit laundry and air conditioning. Nine units will be wheelchair accessible, and 23 units will be supported by the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA).

Out West cafe opens, Grindcore House West closes + more West Philly business news

Here’s some exciting news about new cafe and restaurant openings in the area, but there is one business closing, too.

• A new cafe, Out West, opened over the summer at 5127 Walnut Street and already has a lot of admirers. Founded by Philadelphia entrepreneur and James Beard Award winner Muhammad Abdul-Hadi (he also owns Down North Pizza in Strawberry Mansion), Out West offers “coffee, breakfast and community,” according to its website. Executive Chef Mike Carter has prepared a creative menu, including items like Crispy Lamb Scrapple Sandwich and Smoked Black Bean Toast. Out West also has an interesting selection of specialty drinks, like Avocado Lemonade and Honeydew Sage Matcha Soda. Cobbs Creek community members plant 2,000 native species at Johnny Sample Recreation Center

City officials, community organizations, and residents gathered Friday at Johnny Sample (Cobbs Creek) Recreation Center in West Philadelphia for a Community Planting Day, which included a preview of the nearly completed $15 million facility renovation before its official opening in the fall. The event brought together Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Fairmount Park Conservancy, Rebuild Philadelphia, and community volunteers to plant 2,000 native species and enhance green spaces on the grounds of the recreation center.

Led by Fairmount Park Conservancy, volunteers added native plants to the renovated recreation center’s landscape. More greenery and connection between the recreation center and the park’s natural environment were key priorities identified during the project’s community engagement phase.

St. Joe’s reaches agreement to sell former USciences campus south of Woodland Ave (updated)

Saint Joseph’s University announced today that it has reached an agreement to sell its buildings south of Woodland Avenue to the Belmont Neighborhood Educational Alliance for an undisclosed sum.

“Potential plans for the space include a new affordable teachers college, which may help alleviate Philadelphia’s chronic shortage of well-qualified and experienced teachers, as well as a potential new school emphasizing public service and leadership,” a university statement emailed to university faculty and staff this morning read.

Property developer Michael Karp is the chair of Belmont Neighborhood Educational Alliance’s board of directors. The non-profit runs a charter school network in West Philadelphia and Center City.

Philly Bike Action, Councilmember Gauthier to celebrate new 47th Street bike lane with group ride

Philly Bike Action, the non-profit organization advocating for safer bike lanes in the city, is planning a group ride through the neighborhood to celebrate the new protected bike lane on South 47th Street, according to the group’s announcement. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13. Councilmember Jamie Gauthier, who worked on the 47th Street redesign project with community members and organizations, is expected to participate in the event as well.

The ride is expected to begin at 9:20 a.m. at Clark Park (gathering starts at 9:00) and the approximately 4-mile long route will include the 47th, 48th, Walnut and Chestnut bike lanes. If you want to join in, RSVP here.
