Safety improvements coming to 47th, 48th Streets; Provide your feedback at two community meetings scheduled for this month

The Walnut Street repaving project is currently underway between 33rd and 63rd Streets, which will include traffic calming measures and safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists. Here’s a chance for community members to weigh in on safety concerns along two other busy West Philly streets where improvements are long overdue.

Thanks to local advocacy, 47th Street between Chestnut and Paschal Avenue and 48th Street between Market and Kingsessing Ave. are being considered for safety improvements. The City’s Office of Transportation, Infrastructure, and Sustainability (OTIS) and Councilmember Jamie Gauthier are hosting two community open house meetings to discuss different safety infrastructure options for the corridor (see the infographic below).

Pedestrian safety improvements finally coming to Cobbs Creek Parkway

In the wake of the tragic death of 25-year-old Avante Reynolds, a pedestrian killed on Cobbs Creek Parkway last month, and the demand for changes from the community, PennDOT and the city’s Streets Department have agreed to carry out safety improvements on the Parkway. The decision was announced today during a meeting with elected officials from West Philadelphia that included State Sen. Anthony Williams, State Rep. Joanna McClinton, and City Councilmember Jamie Gauthier.

PennDOT will begin installing multiple improvements within the next month, including rumble strips along the center lanes along the Parkway from Girard Avenue to Baltimore Avenue. A new style of rumble strip technology will be used which minimizes noise and nuisance to neighboring residents.  Continue Reading

Street improvement work scheduled for South 45th Street

The Streets Department will continue street improvement work in many parts of West Philadelphia on the week of June 3rd, including S. 45th Street between Larchwood and Market streets.

This is a reminder that the work schedule includes temporary full street closures and parking restrictions. Temporary ‘No Parking’ signs will be posted in advance of each scheduled activity. Residents are urged to move their cars from the work sites when temporary ‘No Parking’ signs are posted, so that vehicles are not towed. Street improvement work to begin in West Philadelphia on Monday, May 27 (track it now online!)

Street improvement work will take place in West Philadelphia during the week of May 27th in the areas covered by the 16th and 19th Police Department – including portions of Vine Street, Aspen Street, Malvern Avenue, Wynnefield Avenue and some other areas. The work schedule includes temporary full street closures and parking restrictions. The work will be completed in separate phases – milling, adjusting of manhole covers, and resetting of utility boxes – which will take place in separate activities over the course of the week.  Continue Reading

Portion of 40th street to be closed to traffic on Tuesday-Friday nights until October

Street improvement work has been happening on 40th street since last month with temporary street closures and parking restrictions during work hours. According to a new announcement by the Penn Public Safety Division, 40th street between Walnut and Locust will be closed to all vehicles between the hours of 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., on Tuesdays through Fridays, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 28. These traffic restrictions will last approximately five weeks until October 2, according to the announcement.

Police will be on scene to assist with traffic detours during these weeks.

Street improvement work planned next week for 3800-4600 blocks of Spruce Street

The Philadelphia Streets Department has announced street improvement work on some West Philadelphia streets, including the 3800 to 4600 blocks of Spruce Street, for the week of June 11. The work schedule includes temporary, full street closures and parking restrictions (weather or special events in the area may alter the resurfacing schedule).

Work will be completed in separate phases – milling and adjusting of manhole covers and resetting of utility boxes – which will take place in separate activities over the course of the week.

Temporary ‘No Parking’ signs will be posted in advance of each scheduled activity. Residents are urged to move their cars from the work sites when temporary ‘No Parking’ signs are posted, so that vehicles are not towed. If your car is towed, please contact your local Police District to determine its location (also check this earlier post about where a towed car was found).
