‘Moving Mural’ debuts on SEPTA’s Market-Frankford line car

SEPTA has unveiled a very cool subway car today – it is fully wrapped with a colorful mural! The project is a collaboration between SEPTA and the Philadelphia Mural Arts program. This moving mural is titled “We Are All Neurons” and was designed and created with the help of local students participating in the Mural Arts Local Emerging Artists Projects (LEAPs). The students worked with the mural artist Benjamin Volta to “visualize their own brains as interconnected idea machines.” They drew hundreds of neurons, and they worked together to design a colorful vinyl wrap for a subway car.

The car with the “moving mural” was launched this morning at 69th St Transportation Center and will be used on Market-Frankford line so we hope you’ll be lucky to see it and ride in it.

Building near 46th Street El stop here, then gone

Posted on 29 November 2012 by Mike Lyons

Crews today were wrapping up the demolition of a cluster of two-story buildings that housed apartments and a couple of small businesses next to the 46th Street El stop.

The demolition has been licensed by the city, but so far there is no word on what, if anything, will be built on the site. New York Fried Chicken and a Donuts Plus were located in the building. The demolition leaves the west side of S. Farragut between Market and Ludlow streets vacant.

By the way, if you are wondering about construction or demolition work near your home, the City’s Department of Licenses and Inspections has a fairly robust property search feature on its website. Just enter the address of the property in question into the “Property History” search window and it will (usually) show you any licenses, permits or violations associated with the property.

Want to get married on the El?

Posted on 05 January 2011 by Mike Lyons

Mayor Michael Nutter will marry a couple around Valentine’s Day aboard the Market-Frankford El as it rumbles through West Philly as part of a tour of Market Street rooftop murals known collectively as “A Love Letter for You.”

SEPTA and the Mural Arts Program run tours of the murals from aboard the train – the best viewing spot – each Saturday. These tours have included at least one marriage proposal in the past. In February, Nutter will marry a couple chosen in a contest sponsored by SEPTA and the Mural Arts Program.

This is from the Mural Arts Program website:

Tell us why you would be the perfect couple to be married on the Love Train. Attach a video, a photo, a poem…be creative, be artistic! The winner will be selected by City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and SEPTA. To enter, email: events@muralarts.org

West Philly native Steve Powers and a collection of artists created the murals in the summer of 2009. Love Letter is a series of 50 rooftop murals running along the El tracks from 45th to 63rd Streets. The murals have also been captured in book form.

Here is a partial “map” of the murals (click to enlarge):
