City Council, 3rd District candidate, Jabari Jones, withdraws from race

Posted on 23 March 2023 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Councilmember Jamie Gauthier’s path to re-election got a lot easier this week when Jabari K. Jones, widely seen as a viable competitor to her 3rd District seat, dropped out of the race.

Jones, the 28-year-old head of the West Philadelphia Corridor Collaborative, positioned himself to the right of Gauthier on issues like development and crime, but withdrew from the race on Monday ahead of a hearing on legal challenges to his nominating petitions. He was one of about a two dozen candidates for City Council who faced challenges to their paperwork this week. The challenges are a longstanding tradition in Philly politics.

Lodged by three 3rd District voters and committeepeople, the legal challenges alleged that many of the people who signed Jones’ nominating petitions did not live in the District or were not registered Democrats. City Council candidates are required to submit 750 signatures to be nominated.

The 3rd District race was setting up to be one of the more competitive races in this year’s municipal primaries. There is no Republican challenger to Gauthier’s seat. All 17 City Council seats will be on May 16 primary ballots.

Jabari K. Jones, a community advocate and small-business advocate, announced his candidacy for the City Council’s 3rd District seat on Friday. He will run against incumbent Jamie Gauthier in the 2023 primary election. Gauthier kicked off her re-election campaign on January 21.

“I have been called to run for this seat by residents that want results over rhetoric and problem solving over photo ops,” Jones said in a statement prior to Friday’s event. “Our community deserves bold leadership that understands the effect of legislation and holds the government accountable to the people of the Third District.”

Jones has said that gun violence, housing, and developing economic opportunities for the community are the reasons he is running for City Council. As The Philadelphia Inquirer (subscription-based service) noted last week, Jones would focus more on solving crime than unproven prevention strategies. Continue Reading

Political newcomer Jamie Gauthier pulled off the biggest upset in Tuesday’s primary election, handily defeating longtime incumbent Jannie Blackwell in the City Council 3rd District race. The win appears to end the 45-year reign of the Blackwell family in the district, which has undergone massive demographic changes in recent years.

Gauthier garnered about 56 percent of the approximately 25,000 votes cast and with no Republican candidate in Tuesday’s primary, the win almost assures her victory in the November general election.  Continue Reading
