Summer’s first Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll tonight

Posted on 02 June 2011 by WPL

One of the coolest events in West Philly and something many of us have been looking forward to all year is finally here. The first Dollar Stroll of the season is taking place tonight on Baltimore Avenue between 41st and 52nd Streets, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dollar Stroll means $1 deals on some popular items from local shops, cafes and restaurants (see the full list of participating businesses on the flyer below).

Local food vendors are lining up to showcase what they are good at and to satisfy every taste and preference in food and drink, from vegan to carnivore and fruit juice to beer. We figure that for about $6 bucks you can get dinner, desert, a couple of beers and about a dozen tunes (see below).

Worthy of special mention is that besides $1 deals you’ll be able to pick up a free-download card with an access code to download the “West Philly Mix Tape” featuring tracks by 11 West Philly bands, including West Philadelphia Orchestra. Download cards will be available at many of the participating locations.

And finally, $1 food and drinks are great, but don’t forget to stop by Curio Theatre to pick up tickets to their 2011-12 preview shows. This local gem put up some hugely popular performances this past season.

Baltimore Avenue Dollar Strolls, typically taking place twice every summer, have always been very popular, drawing huge crowds of both West Philly residents and guests. But this year, the event is returning with a new take, after taking a break last summer due to the pandemic.

On Saturday, Sept. 25, from 12 – 4 p.m., visitors are invited to stroll up and down Baltimore Avenue between 40th and 52nd Streets to visit local small businesses and restaurants during the Baltimore Avenue Saturday Stroll. Although there won’t be $1 offers from most participating businesses like during the Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll, they will offer Stroll specials, discounts, and unique offerings during the event. How about those Stroll lines?

Posted on 18 September 2015 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Dollar Strolls always bring huge crowds to Baltimore Avenue looking for $1 specials from neighborhood restaurants and other businesses, but last night was something absolutely crazy. Reader Marshall Ledger sent us this panoramic photo with the following commentary:

“Two lines to Desi [Village] (its tables of samosas, pakoras, and mango lassi on the left): one stretching to and past Melville, the other up toward 46th Street, past Renata’s Kitchen (tables of croissants, chocolate cookies, and sodas on the right).”

No Stroll but Dining Days reservations being taken now

Posted on 18 June 2013 by WPL

We have some good news and some bad news for those who were anticipating a new date in July for the Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll after it was cancelled last week due to rain. The merchants have not been able to agree on a reschedule date so there will be no stroll until September, according to University City District’s Mark Christman. The next (and only) scheduled Stroll this year is on September 12, 2013 and we hope that the weather will be more favorable for this popular community event next time.

DiningDaysAnother great way to try some of the best food in the area – though not for $1 – is the 9th University City Dining Days, which kicks off July 18. Some 29 West Philly restaurants are participating in the event and taking reservations now. As always, you can select a dining option that works best for your palate (and your wallet!) out of the list of restaurants participating in the “3 courses, 3 prices” promotion – a pre-fixe three-course dinner special for $15, $25 or $35. The list includes both most popular dining destinations, like Dock Street Brewery or Jose Garces’ Distrito, and newcomers, such as Han Dynasty, Harvest Seasonal and Doc Magrogan Oyster House. The restaurants that range from craft beer bars to celebrity chef restaurants to cozy BYOBs to international cuisine are now taking reservations.

To check out the list of participating restaurants with downloadable menus and to make your reservation, please visit: http://www.ucdiningdays.com/ Note: prices are for dinner only and do not include tax, gratuity or alcohol, and reservations should be made directly through the participating restaurant. University City Dining Days will run until Aug. 1, 2013.

The final Stroll of summer

Posted on 30 August 2011 by WPL

Baltimore Avenue Dollar StrollHow do we know that the summer’s almost over? The final 2011 Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll will take place this Thursday, Sept. 1. Yes, the fourth and the final one this year. So, don’t miss the chance to enjoy $1 deals again and say goodbye to this event until the next summer.

We hear that nearly 20 businesses, vendors and food trucks will participate in the final Dollar Stroll, so look out for new participants.

The stroll will start as usual at 5:30 p.m. (it’s not a bad idea to come early) and will go on until 8:30 p.m. Apart from the vendors, there will be live music and street performances as well. And, as always, there will be copies of the free West Philly Mix Tape download card available for pick-up. If you haven’t got one, stop by the University City District table in front of Calvary Church (48th and Baltimore).

What do Schoolly D, dollar samosas and a parklet have in common?

They will all be on Baltimore Avenue tomorrow.

The monthly Baltimore Avenue Stroll, which runs tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., will feature the usual large selection of dollar items – from cans of beer and samosas to theater tickets and ice cream. But new additions include the city’s first “parklet,” which will be officially unveiled a few hours before the stroll begins. As we reported earlier, the parklet is on 43rd Street, adjacent to the Green Line Cafe.

As part of the celebration DJ Osagie will play some tunes in the parklet.

Speaking of music, there will be a lot of action at the west end of the stroll this time. None other than Schoolly D, a gangsta rap original, will be DJing outside Elena’s Soul, which will be serving dollar wings, yams, potato salad, mac and cheese. Schoolly D also has a song, “West Philly,” on the downloadable “West Philly Mix Tape.” You can pickup a card that gives you access to the download at the University City District table, which is usually located near the Calvary Center at 48th and Baltimore.

The Philly rock band The Makes will be performing and the new Mediterranean restaurant Aksum (4630 Baltimore Ave.) will participate in its first Dollar Stroll. There will likely be more food trucks in the mix this time too. For a rundown of vendors, click on the image.
