Posted on October 7, 2022 8:00 pm by mshaffer

Please note: This performance will take place on the Presser Foundation Stage in the TD Pavilion as part of our new series, Downstage @ the Mann, where both audience and artist are on stage together in an up-close, under cover, and open-air setting. This will be a general admission, seated event.

Don’t miss Resistance Revival Chorus on Friday, October 7 for a one-of-a-kind performance Downstage @ the Mann! Drawing from a larger collective of more than 60 women and non-binary singers, the Resistance Revival Chorus fuses music and activism inspiring change and uplifting women’s voices in the music industry and the world.

Chorus members are touring musicians, film and television actors, Broadway performers, solo recording artists, gospel singers, political activists, educators and more, representing a multitude of identities, professions, creative backgrounds and activist causes. From major concert halls and music festivals to pop-up performances for unsuspecting subway riders, the chorus performs euphoric music that mines the rich history of the protest song and embraces joy as an act of resistance.

SEPTA hopes to launch smart phone tickets by October; Testing currently underway

Posted on 23 August 2022 by WestPhillyLocal.com

SEPTA is preparing to introduce new technology that will allow riders to pay for trips with their smart phones, according to reports. The mobile ticket program is expected to launch by October, and will be available on all modes of transit except Regional Rail.

Only Android and iPhone users will be able to use this new feature and those who have a SEPTA Key account. One of the advantages of the new technology is that “multi-tapping” will be allowed, which means rides for other people (up to five) can be purchased on a single SEPTA Key account, something SEPTA Key cards are not devised to do.

The initial testing phase of the new technology took place in May and mostly included SEPTA employees. The second testing phase is expected to launch next month and SEPTA is seeking users not as familiar with the program. If you have one of the phones mentioned above and a SEPTA Key account and would like to participate in the pilot, fill out this online form.

Regional Rail users will have to wait until at least Spring 2023 to use mobile tickets. For more info, check out this article by Billy Penn.

SEPTA to replace weekly student Transpasses with Fare Cards

Posted on 08 July 2021 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Weekly transpasses are being replaced by fare cards for Philadelphia public school students, the School District of Philadelphia and SEPTA have announced. About 65,000 eligible students in Philadelphia will receive a SEPTA Student Fare Card – a contact-free, reusable chip card that students can use to get to and from school during the 2021-2022 school year.

Here’s how the card will work for students:

Students can use the fare card up to eight times per day between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on any bus, trolley or subway on school days. If a student needs to use regional rail, they can upgrade their student fare card at designated SEPTA stations for about $10 per 5-day school week. Continue Reading

SEPTA updates list of closed Market-Frankford Line stations, asks riders to wear a mask (updated)

Posted on 15 April 2020 by WestPhillyLocal.com

UPDATE (4/15/2020): SEPTA began offering free surgical masks to riders on some buses and subway trains and at 69th Street, 15th Street, Suburban and Jefferson stations, according to reports. This is a temporary initiative intended for riders who have not yet secured their own masks or facial coverings. It will only be available while supplies last, according to CBS Philly.

4/14/2020: SEPTA’s “Lifeline Service Schedule,” designed for safer traveling for essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, went into effect on April 9th. The new schedule includes suspended select trolley lines and bus routes and also closed select trolley and train stops/stations.

The original Lifeline Service Schedule, published last Wednesday, has been updated. Some El stations in West Philadelphia that SEPTA had planned to close, including the 46th Street station, remain in operation.  Continue Reading

Another big apartment building coming to 4200 block of Chestnut; revised plan for smaller one at 4000 Market

Posted on 22 October 2019 by Mike Lyons

The development boom along the 4200 block of Chestnut Street will continue with a seven-story, 102-unit building that will likely begin construction early next year.

Developers presented the plan to the Spruce Hill zoning committee last night as part of the city’s Civic Design Review process required for buildings of a certain size and use. But neither the SHCA nor the city itself has much oversight over the “by right” project, the second major “by right” project on that block this year. A 278-unit building is underway nearby at the former site of the Christ Memorial Church at 43rd and Chestnut.  Continue Reading

SEPTA to stop selling paper transfers beginning Aug. 1

Posted on 27 July 2018 by WestPhillyLocal.com

This is a reminder that SEPTA will stop selling paper transfers beginning August 1st.

Paper transfers for travel on buses, subways and trolleys will stop being issued at the end of the service day on Tuesday, July 31. Starting August 1, to receive a qualifying $1 transfer, customers will need to use a SEPTA Key Card with Travel Wallet. Customers who are eligible for reduced fare travel will need to use a SEPTA Key Card with Travel Wallet to receive the half-fare $0.50 transfer.

This is the latest effort by SEPTA to encourage more customers to switch to the Key Card, which was launched in June 2016. The majority of SEPTA customers have already made the switch.

After eliminating token and magnetic stripe TransPass sales at SEPTA-operated locations in the spring, SEPTA will also end third-party retail sales of tokens and magnetic stripe passes by Aug. 1.
