Dr. Venessa Davies, Institutional Grants and Compliance, Bryn Mawr College

Absent from histories of Egyptology are intellectuals of color who engaged with white Egyptologists in universities. This talk discusses a range of reactions of scholars of color in the early 20th century. Although some were uninterested in connections with ancient Egyptian culture, others marshaled scholarly evidence of the glorious past of the Nile River Valley to construct an African history that would inspire black people in the Americas to understand their existence as valuable.
