In parts of West Philly we have big old trees with lots of dropped leaves. They are already clogging street gutters.

UPDATE (2:45 p.m.): Philadelphia public schools will be closed tomorrow, Superintendent William Hite announced. Also, SEPTA will reinspect tracks and routes after the storm. Service is canceled for Tuesday morning.

As of 2 p.m., there haven’t been any power outages reported in West Philly. Please check the PECO Power Outage map for updates. What appears to be a problem already is leaf-clogged street gutters. If you have one near your home, you might want to take a minute to clear it.

We included some storm prep tips in a post yesterday. You can find that here. At the end of this post we have some important phone numbers and an embedded #sandyinphilly Twitter feed, which many local media outlets are using to keep people updated.

Here are some other closures for Tuesday:

• Public schools are closed, Superintendent William Hite announced.

• No SEPTA service Tuesday morning.

• City offices closed.

• Courts closed.

• City trash pickup scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled. If Tuesday is your day, hold off until next Tuesday.

• Most Amtrak routes in the Northeast have been cancelled. They have good info on their Facebook page here.

If you need some last-minute supplies, here are some businesses that are open as of about 2 p.m.:

• Mariposa Food Coop is open and just got in a big produce and bread delivery from Four Worlds Bakery. (Update: Mariposa is closing at 5 p.m.)

• Milk and Honey Market is open at 45th and Baltimore.

• Supremo Shop n’ Bag on Walnut Street between 43rd and 44th plans to stay open until 3 p.m.

• For halal supplies, Makkah Market at 4249 Walnut St. is open.

• CVS at 43rd and Locust will be open indefinitely. The manager there said they will be open until the electricity goes out.

• Green Line Cafe and Earth Cup are open. (Update: Earth Cup has reportedly closed)

• The Gold Standard will be serving their weekend brunch today and tomorrow.

• Fu-Wah Market is open at 810 S. 47th St.

• The Dollar Store on 48th between Spruce and Pine is open and they have a pretty good selection of candles remaining and a bunch of flashlights.

Here’s a couple of fun pumpkin carving and decorating events taking place in the neighborhood this weekend:

“Build it Bus” for pumpkin carving at Clark Park

Saturday Oct. 27, 1:00-2:00 pm

Woodland Presbyterian Church is hosting a Fall pumpkin carving and craft time in Clark Park. The “Build it Bus” will be there too! The bus is a place where kids can come and use woodworking tools to carve the pumpkins and make crafts. The first 50 to arrive will get pumpkins to take home with them. Look for the converted paratransit bus in the parking lot by the soccer field between 1 and 2 pm.

Pumpkin Day at Vineyard Community Church

If you are looking for something fun and free to do this upcoming Sunday with your family, check out the annual Pumpkin Day event hosted by Vineyard Community Church. Due to the forecast calling for rain, it’ll be indoors, in the new church building located at 123 S. 51st Street.  If by chance the weather is gorgeous, the event will be held at Malcolm X Park (52nd & Pine). There will be plenty of fun things to do that involve all things fall, including pumpkin decorating, face-painting, fall crafts, jewelry making, games and prizes, and yummy fall treats!

Your input is needed on a plan to transform a mile of vacant land along the western banks of the Schuylkill river between Grays Ferry Avenue and 58th Street, which is set to become a key link in the Schuylkill River trail.

The project provides an opportunity to convert publicly owned vacant land into public green space and to increase access to a West Philly gem – Bartram’s Garden. But there’s more to it; this new open space could provide riverfront access and recreation opportunities to local neighborhoods, help restore an important watershed, and extend the Schuylkill River Trail.

PennPraxis is conducting a series of public events and meetings to open up the “Bartram’s Mile” project to public input. Your input will be used to create a series of design proposals and cost estimates. The first meeting/walking tour is this Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m. Here’s more information:

The third annual Philly Photo Day is tomorrow (Oct. 26) and everyone in the city is invited to take a photograph. The photo can be of any subject, as long as it’s taken on October 26. Philadelphia Photo Arts Center will print all the pictures and hang them for exhibition in the Crane Arts Building in Kensington. In addition to the main exhibition, PPAC will place select Philly Photo Day pictures on city billboards, Septa buses and trains, creating a public exhibition of the work.

“At its core, Philly Photo Day is about increasing access to the arts for everyone in Philadelphia,” said Sarah Stolfa, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center.

You can upload your photo from October 26 to October 30 on this page (you can only submit one picture).

The 2nd Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest runs from October 15 through October 29. All ages are welcome to participate. Prizes are supplied by these West Philly businesses: Curio Theatre (2 tickets), Dock Street Brewery (a gift card), Four Worlds Bakery (a gift card), Green Line Cafe (a gift card), Honest Tom’s Taco Shop, Lil’ Pop Shop, Locust Moon Comics (a copy of BATMAN: The Long Halloween), Mariposa Food Co-op (a goodie basket), Penn Museum (two general passes to the Museum + a MAYA 2012 tee + a copy of the latest issue of Expedition Magazine), Sabrina’s Cafe (a gift card), and VIX Emporium (a gift card + tote bag).

Here’s how it works:

Submit a snapshot of your pumpkin by email (contest@westphillylocal.com) that includes your name, address (West Philly residents only please), and age (if you are entering the Kids category). Entries from kids 12 and under will also be entered into the Kids category. Be sure to get a good photo that shows off your pumpkin’s best features.

Simon is a 10-month-old puppy and has until Thursday, Oct. 25, at 6 pm to get out of ACCT-Philly into a foster or adoptive home. He has been an incredible trooper, having lived at ACCT since August 1. He’s kept himself emotionally together, but now he has injured his knee and needs a place to go. Simon needs eight weeks of crate rest and lots of TLC to let his knee heal. Simon also needs a weight loss program–he sure hasn’t lost his appetite living at the shelter!

With weight loss and crate rest, Simon’s knee would probably heal on its own because he should only weigh about 37 lbs. Simon is a really smart dog who loves his people. Once his knee is healed, he’d do very well with an active family with older kids.

Simon says that cats are soooo great that he probably shouldn’t live with them. But he could live with another dog!

Could you be Simon’s savior and foster him? All medications and food will be supplied by ACCT-Philly and his Pen Pal, his special volunteer at the shelter, will supply a crate. All you need to provide is the warm comfy home and a dedication to saving his life.
