A West Philly-rooted lineup graces the Trolley Portal Gardens this spring as Pop-Ups at the Portal returns to 40th and Baltimore Ave. starting May 7. University City District is teaming up with local performer and curator Gretchen Elise to present five weeks of free, interactive, all-ages entertainment. Pop-ups will run every Thursday from May 7 through June 4, 5:30 p.m.– 7:30 p.m., and are fair-weather only.
“As Philadelphia celebrates the country’s 250th this summer, University City District is focused on highlighting the local arts community here in West Philadelphia,” says Margaret Leidy Starke, UCD’s Director of Programs and Partnerships. “We’re thrilled Gretchen Elise has shaped a lineup presented by West Philly-connected acts, showcasing the history and diversity of the neighborhood.”
Gretchen Elise, who curates and hosts the series, shares: “I wanted West Philly roots to be a through-line connecting all acts this spring, aligned with UCD’s vision for the 250th.”
Denise King, West Philadelphia’s vocal jazz ambassador, kicks off the series on May 7th.
“I’ve lived in West Philly for over 70 years,” said King. “My music career began on 60th St. above Girard Ave and from there I’ve been around the world,” she explains.
West Philly Orchestra (May 14) celebrates 20 years as a vibrant, powerful and extremely danceable brass band this year. Founding member Elliot Levin, a West Philly native, shares: “WPO was born during jam sessions at 45th and Locust, playing Balkan music.”
Boogieman Dela (May 21), born and raised in West Philadelphia, launched from local family gatherings and barbecues to venues including Elena’s Soul Lounge and Mill Creek Tavern, helping to establish his presence in the city’s grassroots music scene. Nelly Line Dance, also locally born and raised, established her freelance yoga and line dance businesses in West Philly, and has visions of opening a yoga studio on the 52nd St. corridor, stating “West side is the best side.”
Leading the first reggae band to grace the Pop-Ups, Solomon Dub (May 28), MJ aka Youthman grew up at 52nd and Market, schooled by the ins and outs of the music industry centered on 52nd St.
Last, Gretchen Elise (June 4) has been working, volunteering and raising children in West Philadelphia for over 20 years. “I’m proud to be anchored by my percussionist Jan Jeffries’ 70+ years as a leader in this area,” she shares. “She keeps me grounded, paying homage to those who have come before, and reminds us to keep the groove at all costs. We throw down, so don’t miss this!”
