Holiday tree recycling events, programs

January 6, 2026

Here are some ways to get rid of your holiday trees in an environmentally and community-friendly way. The City’s Department of Sanitation is again hosting Christmas tree community collection events and offering other tree disposal opportunities. There will also be tree collection events hosted by local non-profits.

City-run drop-off sites

The Department of Sanitation Christmas Tree Recycling Program kicked off Jan. 5 and will run through Saturday, Jan. 17. While the program is running, West Philly residents can bring their Christmas tree to one of the following drop-off locations on specific dates (see below):

• 43rd St. and Powelton Ave.

• 4300 Chester Ave. (Clark Park)

• 52nd St. and Pine St. (Malcolm X Park)

• 54th St. and Woodbine Ave.

These drop-off locations will operate on Saturday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents may also bring their trees to the Sanitation Convenience Center located at 5100 Grays Ave. Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Before dropping off your tree please make sure that it is untied and has no decorations. Recycled trees will be chipped up and used as a bulking agent for composting.

Please note that trees left curbside (not at a drop-off site) will be picked up as trash and will not be recycled.

TreeCycle with UC Green

The annual TreeCycle event hosted by UC Green, a local non-profit community greening organization, will take place on Saturday, Jan. 10 at two West Philly parks: Clark Park (43rd and Baltimore), 10 a.m.-12 p.m., and Malcolm X Park (51st and Pine), 1-3 p.m.

Recycled trees will be mulched and used to nourish established park trees. $5–$20 donation per tree is requested. UC Green volunteers will be collecting trees and donations.
