The Lancaster Avenue Jazz & Arts Festival is returning for its milestone 20th season with a powerful tribute to jazz icon John Coltrane as the community approaches the centennial of his birth. The free, family-friendly event will take place rain or shine on Saturday, July 18, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Saunders Park Greene (39th Street and Powelton Avenue).
Organized through a collaborative effort by HopePHL’s community-based programs, The Producer’s Guild of Philadelphia, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and a dedicated committee of local residents—with technical production from Nu Millenium Productions—the festival promises an unforgettable day of culture and community. Attendees can look forward to world-class live jazz, local artisans and vendors, a children’s activity village, and an array of local food trucks.
“We are thrilled to celebrate our 20th annual Jazz Festival by honoring the legendary John Coltrane,” said Kathy Desmond, President of HopePHL. “This is shaping up to be our best lineup yet, offering an incredible day out for everyone in and around West Philadelphia.”
Honoring a Jazz Legend
John Coltrane reshaped the landscape of music through his groundbreaking approaches to improvisation, harmony, and spiritual expression. His deep roots in Philadelphia—where he lived, studied, and refined his revolutionary sound—remain a point of immense local pride. His former home in Strawberry Mansion is currently being preserved as a historic cultural landmark.
The festival kicks off a broader season of tribute. HopePHL will host a formal “Birthday Celebration” for Coltrane on September 18, and the organization’s Neighborhood Advisory Committee book club is dedicating its summer sessions to the book Coltrane on Coltrane.
A Stellar Musical Lineup
This year’s headline performance features the multi-talented Camille Thurman accompanied by the Darrell Green Quartet. Thurman, a universally acclaimed saxophonist, vocalist, and composer, is widely recognized as one of the most dynamic contemporary voices in jazz. Alongside master drummer Darrell Green, the ensemble delivers deeply rooted, high-energy performances that bridge jazz tradition with modern innovation.
The main stage will also welcome back crowd favorites Glenn Bryan & Friends. Highlighting the incredible depth of rising local talent, the festival will feature performances from Justin Bowden, Black Tie Entertainment: Equinox, and the Hines Creative Arts Initiative—all highlighting exceptional youth jazz musicians.
Community Voices & Interactive Features
A unique addition to this year’s festivities is 1776 Seconds: Philadelphia Illuminated, a citywide public storytelling initiative presented by Creative Philadelphia commemorating the nation’s recent 250th anniversary. Under the theme “Looking Back. Looking Ahead,” West Philadelphia residents are invited to share their personal stories and visions for the city. Video interviews will be recorded live at the Creative Philadelphia station from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The recordings will culminate in a massive public celebration at City Hall on August 4.
Additionally, younger attendees can participate in an interactive community drumming circle hosted within the festival’s Children’s Village.
“Celebrating our vibrant community with this festival is always the absolute highlight of our year,” noted Bernadine Hawes, Board Chair of the HopePHL Community Development Corporation. “We are immensely grateful to our planning committee, partners, and corporate sponsors who make this free event possible.”

The 20th annual festival is supported by a generous lineup of sponsors, including: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Creative Philadelphia, Vanguard, Xfinity, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, Plenary Infrastructure Philadelphia, Iron Stone Real Estate Partners, Penn Live Arts, Aramark, North American Medical Associates, Lincoln Financial, Ballard Spahr LLP, Mill Creek Community Partnership, Brown & Brown, Jefferson Health Plans, and Sunshine Food Market.
