Two University City restaurant closings announced

March 3, 2023

Unfortunately, there have been reports of two more food establishments closing in West Philly.

• University City’s iconic City Tap House unexpectedly announced permanent closing after 13 years  in operation at 3925 Walnut Street on Feb. 23 and closed three days later. The following message was posted on City Tap House University City’s Instagram page:

“It is with a heavy heart that we are informing you that the last day of service will be Sunday, February 26th. This was a difficult decision, as this location was the launchpad for our company’s growth over the last 13 years.”

Following the announcement, numerous messages of support followed in the comments.

“I’m so sad! Where I fell in love with hospitality. So many amazing memories,” one commenter reacted. “Our favorite part of our time in West Philly. You’ll be missed,” another comment read underneath the announcement.

City Tap House still has another location in Philadelphia, in Logan Square.

• Wishbone fried chicken restaurant has closed its University City location (4034 Walnut St.) after more than nine years. The restaurant, which was voted Best of Philly in 2016 for its excellent chicken fingers, opened in that location in late 2013 in the space previously occupied by iconic Lee’s Hoagie House.

The reason for closing, as reported by The Daily Pennsylvanian, is the company’s decision to merge their two stores into one located in Center City. The decision was influenced by a great increase in deliveries in the area due to the pandemic, which made operating a physical location “less practical.”

The good news is that the business still delivers orders to University City. Another positive news is that a new tenant is expected to move into the space soon, bringing a “new concept to the neighborhood.”
