A man has died after a suspected carbon monoxide leak this afternoon at an apartment building at 48th and Chester.

The building, which includes 40 units, has been evacuated and will likely stay closed overnight. No one else was hospitalized, according to Charles Johnson, a deputy chief with the Philadelphia Fire Department.

Work was being done on the heating system in the building, according to Johnson, before the leak was discovered.

Someone from the building called 911 when the man was found unresponsive. When fire department officials arrived at the scene they discovered high levels of carbon monoxide in the building. The investigation is underway.

Geezush! That is horrible. I lived in the brick apt. house at the corner of 47th and Chester with iron gate, the rectangular terracotta inlay, and sharp roof next to the Chester Food Plaza for six years. I’ve been out of there for seven or so years. That block was great. The folks on that flat stretch of Chester Ave. between 47th and 49th are good folk. It was like it’s own little enclave: Squirrel Hill. There used to be an old Victorian house mid-block that was bought by the owner of the Renaissance bought and subsequently torn down to make way for…nothing. I miss that. I had some good cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks and the (cross my fingers) tuna salad hoagies from the Chester Food Plaza and of course Jenny’s. And they have a Ms. Pacman machine. I’m sorry this happened. Good night.
