University City District (UCD) is offering up to $5,000 grants to small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A $250,000 emergency grant program, launched by UCD on Wednesday thanks to a donation from the University of Pennsylvania, will help independent retailers and restaurants that operate in its coverage area.

The fund makes available grants ranging between $1,000 and $5,000 per qualifying business.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our neighborhood and are essential to its vivacity,” said UCD President Matt Bergheiser. “Our business owners and their employees have always been here to support this community, and we are honored to be present for them in a time of distress.”

Small businesses applying for the funds must complete an online application by Wednesday, April 15 at 5 p.m.

Eligible businesses must be located within University City District’s program area (see map); be a brick and mortar, for-profit retail location, which includes restaurants and goods and services retailers; and be independent operators of no more than five locations which have been in operation on or before January 1st, 2020.

Applications will be reviewed starting April 15, and applicants will be notified starting April 20th. The criteria considered by UCD’s Review Committee includes longevity and presence in the community, the number of jobs sustained by each business, and local ownership, among others.

UCD “will make an effort to support as many local businesses as possible with the available funds,” according to Bergheiser. In addition to grant funds, UCD will provide information resources and technical assistance for businesses seeking help in applying for city, state, and federal relief.

Besides Trump’s utter incompetence- which is murderous in this case- a reasonable person should have a problem with the anti-science bias, the revolving door to Fox News and other right-wing media, the forging of common cause with right wing extremists, the snake-oil charlatanism, the degradation of women, the dog whistles and so much more. It’s much more than just Trump the individual but he represents a very serious problem.

You need to give examples, not just hurl accusations, lest you come across like AD. For example what is this so-called “science” you refer to and how is Trump violating it?

It’s all too simple to ascribe the inherent problems of capitalism to Trump. It’s much more complex. You need to suggest a solution (other than voting for Democrats).
