Primary election results

May 21, 2014

All the votes are in for yesterday’s primary election and here are some local results.

In the democratic primary for the 188th District representation in Pennsylvania House, incumbent James Roebuck defeated local businessman and community organizer Algernong Allen. Roebuck garnered 69 percent of the votes (4,097) versus 31 percent (1,814) for Allen.

Spruce Hill based Republican attorney Matthew Wolfe lost his bid for a seat in the City Council to Democratic candidate Ed Neilson in the special election to replace Councilman-at-Large Bill Green, who resigned his seat to head the School Reform Commission.

The ballot question that asked voters if the city’s minimum wage of $10.88 for city contractors should apply to sub-contractors, mainly Philadelphia International Airport workers, received 93,000 “yes” votes, versus 30,000 “no” votes as of about 11 p.m. on Tuesday (97 percent of precincts reporting), according to the Office of the City Commissioners website.

I am surprised that the Roebuck/Allen result was not closer.

Does anyone know about the results of the other two ballot questions?

  2. Jim Says:

Yeah, I’m specifically interested in the resign to run result.

“Tuesday’s ballot question to repeal the long-standing resign-to-run rule was defeated by a close margin. The issue was also defeated in 2007.

The other two questions on the ballot prevailed.

Voters decided that city subcontractors must pay their workers 150 percent of the federal minimum wage, or $10.88 an hour. The minimum wage issue was front and center with airport workers, who were making as little as $7 an hour.

Voters, by a 2-1 ratio, also gave City Council their blessing to have the authority to approve contracts for legal representation of indigent defendants.

The resign-to-run rule has been in the books since the Home Rule Charter was created in 1951 as a good government salve to years of corrupt one-party rule.

31% seems like a ton of votes for someone going up against the incumbent machine. That is pretty stunning to me and cause for hearty congratulation to Allen. He had my support (if not vote, I’m not a Dem, but a Green). How did Matt Wolfe do? He also had my support.
