More than 100 Henry C. Lea Elementary students have been invited to spend a day at the University of Pennsylvania this Saturday (Dec. 1) when they become honorary college students during College Day 2012. The goal of this event (held three times each year) is to “excite students about the college experience, so they will be motivated to work hard in middle and high school and strive for a college education.”

Lea students are expected to come in the morning and stay until about 4 p.m. Penn students will be mentors throughout the day, sharing their college experiences with the kids and showing them around the campus. College Day participants will also take a mock Wharton management course and complete a class project – working in groups, they’ll design products that college students would want to purchase. At the end of their visit, Lea students will see a performance of Penn dance and singing groups.

Update: Service was restored to all the affected residents just before midnight last night.

11/28, 5:48 p.m.: About 930 residents lost their power on Tuesday night, shortly after 11:00 p.m., in the Spruce Hill and Garden Court areas due to an issue with an underground cable at 49th and Spruce Streets, according to PECO spokesperson Liz Williamson. Service was restored to about 865 of those residents by about 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.

There are currently 65 residents in the vicinity of 49th and Spruce Streets without service. “PECO has already contacted those customers to let them know that we are working to replace the underground cable in their area and that their service may not be restored for several hours while we make repairs,” Williamson said at about 5 p.m.

Enid.

Enid and Alvie are two of the cuddliest, sweetest, cleverest cats you may ever meet. They were found as baby kittens a year ago in West Philadelphia by a City Kitties volunteer. They were adopted, but unfortunately their family fell on hard times, and now they are back in foster care in West Philly.

When these two are not curled up with each other for a nap on the bed, they are chasing each other around the house or wrestling on the floor. Enid loves to chase her feather toys and jingly balls around the house, then curl up on your lap while you read a book. Alvie runs to the door when you get home and when you kneel down to pet him, he puts his paws on your shoulders and licks your chin until you pick him up for a pet.

They are very affectionate, playful, and absolutely gorgeous. These two one-year-old cats have never been apart and adore each other – and will adore you!

If you have been considering one cat – think about two! With Enid and Alvie you will have two times the love, two times the fun.

• A Zoo on Wheels is coming to the library on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 3:30 p.m. and bringing Outrageous Reptiles. It’s a great chance to come face to face with snakes, turtles and crocodilians to learn about diverse reptilian lifestyles and the importance of these animals in a variety of ecosystems.

• On Saturday, Dec. 1, from 1:30-3:30 p.m., Lauren Leatherbarrow will lead a wreath making event at the library. This event is being co sponsored by the Friends of Walnut Street West Library and the University City Garden Club. Frames and fresh balsam will be available as well as pine cones. Donation is $10. If you want a bow on your wreath you need to bring 10 feet of wire edge ribbon. Lauren will teach how to make the bows. Attendance is by pre-registration only with the head librarian, Heather Sparks. • On Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the library is holding a Big Holiday Book Sale. Books for all ages will be available, so come and find the perfect gift!

• On Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., the library invites neighbors to the Children’s Holiday Concert featuring piano students of David Shunskis.

Reuben Mitchell.

Reuben Mitchell, an inspiring 31-year-old actor, was riding his motorcycle on the 3900 block of Woodland Avenue shortly after 7 a.m. on November 12 when he struck a car that was making a u-turn. He died later that evening from the injuries sustained in the accident (source: Philly.com). Reuben was cast to play the role of Magnus in an upcoming Curio Theatre show, Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound.

Mourning Reuben’s death and after some difficult decisions, the theatre administration decided to cancel the first weekend of previews scheduled for November 29 – December 1 but to go on with the main production run. Josh Browns who knew Reuben well will be filling the role.

“It’s been a real tragedy for the entire Philadelphia theatre community,” says Curio’s Managing Director Gay Carducci. “Though, we have known Reuben for quite some time, The Real Inspector Hound was going to be the first show that Reuben would have done with us. After much thought we decided to continue on with the show, as we believe Reuben would have wanted us to do.”

The December 5 performance will be held in honor of Reuben, and all of the proceeds that evening will go to his family in an “effort to help them during this trying time.”

Here’s a great way to escape this dreadful weather. Kevin Macdonald’s Marley, a 2012 documentary on the life, music, and legacy of Bob Marley, is playing at Dock Street tonight, beginning at 8 p.m. The film is filled with beautiful sites and sounds of Jamaica and includes some rare footage, incredible performances and revelatory interviews with the people that knew him best.

Dock Street hosts movie nights every Tuesday at 8 p.m. offering beer and pizza specials during films. Next week Dock Street invites folks to the Philadelphia premiere of Superheroes of Stoke, with some intense music and ski scenes and a chance to win ski giveaways.
