Sentencing tomorrow for man who pleaded guilty to highly publicized sexual assault in September

July 12, 2012

The 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint last September near 48th and Springfield and about two dozen other crimes will be sentenced tomorrow.

Kareem Drayton negotiated a plea deal with prosecutors in April on charges stemming from the highly publicized sexual assault and robbery of a 32-year-old teacher. Police say Drayton held a gun to the woman’s head and assaulted her as her boyfriend stood nearby. Drayton also pleaded guilty to other robberies and burglaries in the city. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. tomorrow in courtroom 802 at the Criminal Justice Center (1301 Filbert St.).

Drayton’s accomplice in the robbery of the woman and her boyfriend, 19-year-old Tyshanek Presley, also negotiated a plea arrangement and will be sentenced in August, according to court records.

The sexual assault and robbery took place at about 10 p.m. as the couple returned home from a restaurant. The crime shook many residents in the neighborhood and 100 people attended a monthly police meeting days after the crime to discuss what could be done to curtail crime in the area. The crime also spurred renewed interest in neighborhood watch groups, including the 48th Street Neighborhood Town Watch.

Thanks for following up with this story. I remember hearing about it when it happened. Too often I think that stories like this stay in the headlines for a week and then go away. I like it when news sources follow through and report on the trial, so good job.

To the victim/any victims anywhere: I’m sorry that justice isn’t always swift and that it can never erase a crime committed, but I am awed by your choice to pursue justice for yourself. These 2 will not be able to victimize anyone else, and that’s only because a victim/s stood up and did something. The neighborhood is appreciative, I am sure.

48th Street Neighbors is organizing a group of us to attend the sentencing. We received permission to be there (and appreciation) from our neighbor who was victimized. We believe it is important to show our support to her and her boyfriend, as well as represent the community to the court. Some of us are also deeply engaged in praying for Kareem and Tyshanek. If you are interested in joining us in the courtroom tomorrow, please contact me at pbulack@gmail.com. And I am working on passing messages of support to our neighbor so if you have one, please send that to me as well.
    Thanks all!
    Yours,

Looks like Marquis is being held at PICC and Kenyatta at CFCF.

    Hi Tim,
They are incarcerated, awaiting trial. I am trying to keep up with the dates. Let me know if you want to come – I think anytime the community can be present, at times advised by the DA’s office, its good. I have spoken to several in the DA’s office, and so they know that our community wants to be present as often as possible. I have also added Kenyatta and Marquis to our prayer list, as a group of us have begun to pray together for both victims and those arrested in our neighborhood, as well as for suspects who haven’t been caught yet. Looking for lives to be changed….
    Patty
