Man in critical condition after daytime shooting near 49th and Baltimore

A 31-year-old man was shot multiple times Sunday afternoon in the Cedar Park neighborhood, according to police. The shooting happened shortly before 3 p.m. at 49th and Pentridge Streets. He was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center by police and is currently listed in critical but stable condition, according to police.

So far no arrests have been made and no weapon was recovered.

Police looking for suspect in afternoon shooting outside 52nd Street El station (updated)

Police from the 18th District are looking for information about a shooting on Sunday afternoon outside the El station at 52nd and Market Streets. A 50-year-old man was shot twice in the left leg, according to police. He was transported by police to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and is listed in stable condition. No weapon was recovered at the scene.

Police say shots were fired after an altercation between two males at about 5:30 p.m. at the busy station, which is also a stop on the popular 52 bus route.  Continue Reading

One man killed, another man critically injured in Monday night shooting near 52nd and Sansom

A 39-year-old man was killed and another man was critically injured in a shooting Monday night near 52nd and Sansom Streets, according to reports.

The shooting happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. The 39-year-old victim was shot three times – in the head, chest and leg. He was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead shortly before 11 p.m., according to a report by CBS Philly. The second victim, a man in his 30s, was shot once in the chest. Police: Catalytic converter theft a citywide trend

Thefts from cars in West Philly have been on the rise since last spring, including theft of catalytic converters, according to reports. In a recent report, the 18th Police District alerted residents that thieves citywide are especially interested in catalytic converters from Toyota Priuses (see video below). Several thefts have been reported recently in the 18th District, according to the report. One neighbor had his converter stolen twice in the last month, according to a West Philly Local reader.  Continue Reading

Police pursue vehicle in West Philly in connection with stabbing death of a 65-year-old woman; arrests made

Police arrested two people at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday after they crashed a car near 43rd and Sansom they believe to be owned by the victim of a fatal stabbing in East Germantown early Wednesday morning.

Police pursued the vehicle along West Philly streets on Wednesday morning in connection to the murder of a 65-year-old woman in East Germantown. The woman was found unresponsive inside a bathtub at her home on the 300 block of Mechanic Street around 1:20 a.m. on Wednesday. She had multiple stabbing wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The woman is reportedly the mother of a Philadelphia police officer.  Continue Reading

Newly elected State Rep. Movita Johnson-Harrell faces jail time on corruption charges

Newly elected State Rep. Movita Johnson-Harrell, the first Muslim woman elected to the Pennsylvania legislature, has been arrested on corruption charges.

Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced the charges this morning against Johnson-Harrell, who won the 190th District seat in a special election last March. They include theft, perjury and tampering with public records.

Shapiro said Johnson-Harrell has agreed to plead guilty to the charges and will face jail time. She turned herself in to authorities in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning.  Continue Reading
