Adopt-a-Cat: LiLi

Posted on 27 March 2012 by WPL

This week’s featured cat is LiLi. She’s available for adoption through City Kitties.

LiLi showed up on a rescuer’s doorstep a week after a winter blizzard looking half-dead. She was very thin, her paws were burned from road salt, and she was missing clumps of fur all over her body. Once in foster care, her fur grew back, she gained several pounds, and her personality came shining through. She is now a beautiful tuxedo kitty with big, round eyes that make her look like a cartoon character!

Despite her rough start in life, LiLi is affectionate, loving, and playful. She really loves to cuddle and has a funny personality. She enjoys following her humans around, meowing at them occasionally for attention. LiLi is just thrilled to be inside with an endless supply of food, water, and love. LiLi has lived with another kitty in her foster home, but she would prefer to be an only cat. She would make a fantastic companion to someone looking for a single pet to share their days with.

While in foster care, LiLi developed urinary crystals, an issue common to young female cats. Thanks to her special food, she’s all better now and is a happy and healthy kitty! She uses the litterbox like a champ and never has accidents. She will need to be on prescription wet food for the rest of her life. City Kitties will provide 6 month supply of food. Please don’t let this minor medical issue prevent you from adopting this sweet girl! She deserves a forever home and would make an excellent companion for just about anybody.

LiLi is spayed, FIV/FeLV negative, vaccinated (FVRCP and rabies), uses her litterbox, and has been tested/treated for fleas and parasites as needed. To contact City Kitties, visit this page.

Enjoy Cooking with Cat Ladies, help stray cats in West Philly

Posted on 28 February 2012 by WPL

Here’s one delicious way to help stray cats and kittens in West Philadelphia. City Kitties, a local non-profit volunteer-run feline rescue organization, are bringing back their favorite fundraising event – Cooking with Cat Ladies. The event will take place the evening of Saturday, March 10, at a volunteer’s home.

The hostess, who is an extraordinary cook, will prepare a mouth-watering five-course feast for the event guests. A $50 ticket purchase reserves your seat at the table, where you will enjoy the dinner and the company of other City Kitties volunteers and cat lovers. The menu is not yet finalized, but it will be vegetarian with vegan and gluten-free options.

Seats are limited and City Kitties would like to fill up the table by this Thursday, March 1, so don’t delay in purchasing your ticket. To check out the menu and to reserve your seat, visit this page.

Adopt-a-Cat: O’Malley

Posted on 11 January 2012 by WPL

O’Malley and his foster brother Tiny Tim.

This week’s featured cat is O’Malley. O’Malley was living as a Philadelphia street cat, but his affectionate personality makes everyone think that he was somebody’s pet in a former life. As luck would have it, he found his way into the neighborhood of a City Kitties volunteer. After patiently waiting for weeks until a foster home was available, O’Malley finally got his turn for the opportunity to find a forever home.

He initially didn’t know what to make of life indoors, but it was only a matter of time before he was right at home. This former tough alley cat can now be found playing with toy mice, rolling over for belly rubs, and grooming his foster brother, Tiny Tim. O’Malley loves attention and does not discriminate when it comes to the source. He is extremely talkative, ensuring that you haven’t forgotten about him with his loud and unique “meow.”

O’Malley is an extremely laid-back, low-maintenance guy. He tolerates the constant pestering and teething of Tiny Tim and regularly allows him to sneak a few licks of Fancy Feast from his plate at mealtime. He even politely waits until Tiny Tim walks away from the kitten food before moving in for a chance at some leftovers.

O’Malley will likely be a perfect fit for any type of household whether as an only kitty or with some 4-legged siblings. He is adorably gentle with kittens and seems to enjoy ‘fatherhood.’ He has not had the opportunity to interact with young children or dogs, but he should not have issues with either.

O’Malley is about 2-3 years old, neutered, FIV/FeLV negative, FVRCP and rabies vaccinated, received a fecal exam to test for parasites, uses the litterbox, and was treated for fleas and parasites as needed.

Adopt-a-Cat: Howard and Jenni

Posted on 03 January 2012 by WPL

We haven’t featured cats available for adoption for a couple of weeks, so this week we are presenting two of them.

Howard ended up in animal control when his owner surrendered him. He was 18 lbs at intake, but after two months in the stressful shelter environment, he lost 4 pounds, more than 20% of his body weight! Once he was in a comfortable foster environment, Howie’s appetite came back, and he looks great! He loves to be around people and wants to follow his foster mom everywhere. He is a little nervous around new kitties, but never aggressive – he just needs some time to adjust to them. Howard loves to curl up next to his people and purr, and purr and purr. If you sit down with him for a minute, Howie will rub against you, flop down, and roll over for pets. He is such a sweet guy! Howard would prefer a home without a dog, but he should do really well with kids, given his gentle nature. Please give this big boy the forever home he deserves!

Howard is about three-five years old, neutered, FIV/FeLV negative, FVRCP and rabies vaccinated, tested/treated for fleas/parasites as needed, and uses the litterbox.

Jenni was rescued form a junkyard along with her rambunctious kittens during an early snowstorm. She will start to purr just by talking to her. When you actually pet her, look out! She is a true lap cat. She loves to get on laps and be petted and just purr away. Jenni doesn’t really play with other cats, but she does like to play with toys, preferably ones with bells, whistles, rattles, etc. She isn’t a fan of loud noises or boisterous households, so she would do well in a quiet home by herself or with another laid back kitty.

Jenni is one-two years old, spayed/neutered, FIV/FeLV negative, FVRCP and rabies vaccinated, uses the litterbox, and was treated for fleas and parasites as needed.

Both cats are available for adoption through City Kitties. If you have questions about either one of them or want to meet them, please visit this page for more information.

Abandoned cat, ‘Clark Kent,’ doing better after blood transfusion; PSPCA investigating

Posted on 23 November 2011 by Mike Lyons

Clark Kent is “bright and alert” this morning. (Photo from The Cat Doctor Facebook page.)

The little orange tabby cat that a West Philly resident found lying half-dead in a gutter earlier this week is a fighter. That’s why the folks at The Cat Doctor, who have performed a blood transfusion, rid him of a nasty flea infestation and detected a piece of metal lodged in his colon, have named the cat “Clark Kent.”

The staff at The Cat Doctor are reporting that Clark Kent is recovering, though he still has a long road to get back to full strength. His temperature has risen from a low of 90 degrees when he was found (102 degrees is normal for cats) and he received a blood transfusion from another cat, Diamond, who is one of the house cats at The Cat Doctor.

“If he would not have had that he probably would have died,” said The Cat Doctor’s Lori Horwedel.

Horwedel said Clark Kent is still sleeping on a warming blanket to keep his body temperature up. But he is eating and interested in his surroundings.

“He’s bright and alert this morning,” she said. “When I opened the door (to his cage) he tried to jump out.”

Clark Kent was found in a gutter near Clark Park. He had obviously not been eating well (doctors suspect the piece of metal they found was part of something he tried to eat). He had no collar but he did have a microchip that included information on the people who adopted him. When someone from The Cat Doctor contacted the owner, who adopted him about six months ago, the woman’s mother said they put him outside because they thought he was sick. Enforcement officers from the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) are investigating.

Clark Kent has gained scores of fans worldwide in the two days since he was found. The West Philly-based feline rescue group City Kitties has received donations from Germany, Australia, Ireland and 30 U.S. states that will more than cover Clark Kent’s sizable medical bills.  Now City Kitties is asking those interested in helping to donate at the PSPCA website and choose “humane law enforcement” when asked where they want their donation directed.

Adopt-a-Cat: Norton

Posted on 25 October 2011 by WPL

Norton - adoptable catThis week’s featured cat is Norton, a beautiful young adult cat (one-two years old).

Norton came to City Kitties after a hard life on the streets. Initially shy and easily scared, he’s now an energetic and fiercely devoted cat who loves attention from his people.  He loves having his coat brushed and playing with toys, and catnip makes him the silliest thing on four legs. All he needs is an owner who likes him hopping on the bed at night.

Norton is neutered, FIV/FeLV negative, and has been tested/treated for fleas/parasites as needed.

If you would like to meet him please fill out an adoption application with City Kitties. The adoption process involves an application, reference check, and a visit to your home at the time of adoption. Adoption fee is $85 to help subsidize the cost of veterinary care. To ask a specific question about Norton please use this contact form.
