Marvelous Records to close, Common Beat Music to take over on Baltimore Ave.

July 12, 2017

Here’s a good news/bad news situation for West Philly music lovers, particularly those who dig vinyl or need an instrument or turntable repaired.

The bad news is that The Marvelous – Records and Music on Baltimore Avenue (formerly of 40th Street) is closing after 14 years on July 14. The good news is that the storefront at 4916 Baltimore Ave won’t really skip a beat as a purveyor of music-related stuff.

The Marvelous opened in a basement storefront on 40th Street in 2003 and in 2012 moved into a former yoga studio at 4916 Baltimore Ave., where they offered a large selection of vinyl, CDs, instrument supplies, and more.

“Nothing could have pleased us more than to spend this time rubbing our cheeks up in your jowls and we deeply appreciate every last crusty 45, guitar pick and even crispy comic which you saw fit to purchase from us over the last decade and a half,” owner Milan Marvelous wrote us.

The good news is that Carlo Frese, who did instrument repair and sales at The Marvelous, will open Common Beat Music in the same location on July 15. Common Beat will offer expanded instrument repair services and equipment sales (turntables etc.) as well as recorded music.

The shop will be closed July 23-31 for renovations. There is a big sale going on there right now though. So if you are looking for deals on vinyl, CDs and the like, get down there before 8 p.m. on Friday, July 14. For more info, check out the store’s Facebook page. Common Beat Music also has a Facebook page.

    Real quick correction:

I am the co-owner with Carlo Frese, Keri Girmindl. The Marvelous will be having some deals Thursday and Friday this week, but from this Saturday, the 15th until the following Saturday (the 22nd) we will be having a sale on all old stock vinyl, cds, and more.

Please come visit us! And thank you to Bryan, Milan, and everyone else involved with Marvelous for believing in us and helping us have the opportunity to grow this space even more!!

I’ve definitely bought some sweet albums there over the years, mostly around 2007-2008 when I first moved back. Will miss you guys!

I love Marvelous Records and the team there. They always had what I needed, and if they didn’t, they would order it for me. Thanks for the memories! Strong
