For those of you who prefer locally grown veggies and want to support local farmers during winter months, there’s a new winter CSA (City-Supported Agriculture) program in the area. Greensgrow Farms, located in Kensington, is “really happy” to be offering it for the first time in West Philly this season.

Greensgrow 1

Greensgrow West’s new home at 5123 Baltimore Ave.

Greensgrow West has recently moved to a larger, more permanent location – at 5123 Baltimore Ave. – and Winter CSA share pick-ups will be available there from early December through mid-April.

To become a Winter CSA member, interested individuals can sign up online by November 26. Winter CSA shares include more than veggies; various share options are available – you’ll receive a choice of dairy or vegetable protein; milk, eggs, butter, yogurt, tofu or seitan. Seasonal fruit, fun specialty prepared items and a few pantry staples will also be included. Meat, vegetarian and vegan share options are also available. Check out a photo gallery of the Winter CSA here.

More information about the program is available here. Greensgrow CSA hotline is (215) 380-4355. You can also email: csa@greensgrow.org

Greensgrow Winter CSA – Sign up by November 26!

Posted on October 21, 2016 12:00 am by WestPhillyLocal.com

Eating locally doesn’t have to stop when the summer season ends: you can support local farmers and producers, reduce your carbon footprint, and enjoy the bounty of our region from December–April. Greensgrow’s Fresh Food Team searches out and meets with our region’s finest farmers and producers to plan our winter shares. As always, we make it our mission to gather a selection of the best produce and local food items from within 200 miles of our fair city for each share. Join us as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of growing, storage, preserving, and sourcing 100% local food!

First payments are due before your first pickup. Please keep in mind we contract with farmers on your behalf. When you sign up, you are committing to the full season’s payment schedule.

Sign up by November 26 to pick up the first share: Applications received later will start participation later, depending on the application date, prorated prices will apply.

What Makes Our CSA Special
• Our CSA includes more than veggies. The share mimics the way people cook and eat, rather than providing just one of the food groups. You’ll receive a choice of dairy or vegetable protein; milk, eggs, butter, yogurt, tofu or seitan. We also include seasonal fruit, fun specialty prepared items and a few pantry staples.

• Greensgrow is a Non-Profit. Your support helps sustain our food access and educational programming; The Greensgrow Community Kitchen, SNAP Box Program (a low income farm share) and Greensgrow Mobile Markets (bringing local foods to underserved neighborhoods). Reinvesting in our community is what we’re all about. Triple bottom line, social entrepreneurship; your support helps us do good work.

• Our Locations: This winter you can pick up at Greensgrow Farms in Kensington or Greensgrow West in West Philadelphia. At Greensgrow Farms you can observe a working urban farm in action while you shop at our farmstand and garden center. We carry a quality selection of produce, pastured and grass-fed meats, artisan cheeses, breads, locally produced goods, and plants galore. At Greensgrow West, you’ll be a part of the evolution of our new community and green space. In addition to the garden center you can expect a mini-farmstand with seasonal produce and local bread.

For more information and to sign up, visit: http://greensgrow.csasignup.com/members/types

Our CSA manager is accessible to you for questions or concerns, we’re just a call or text away! CSA hotline at (215) 380-4355 or csa@greensgrow.org

Greensgrow to relocate to 5100 block of Baltimore this summer; fundraiser for new fence underway

Posted on 31 March 2016 by WestPhillyLocal.com

5123BaltimoreAve

“Bamboo Lot” at 5123 Baltimore Ave.

As was reported last spring, Greensgrow West, which is currently renting the former Elena’s Soul space at 4912 Baltimore Avenue, had secured a new, bigger location on the 5100 block of Baltimore, on the so-called “Bamboo Lot.”

We’re happy to report that Greensgrow is preparing to welcome customers at the new location by mid to late summer. The new location will have an expanded garden and education center, including a plant nursery, a farmers’ market, a greenhouse, an outdoor classroom, and gathering space. Here’s what Greensgrow West Assistant Manager Lee Baldwin writes about the relocation:

“We will be operating our retail sales out of our familiar 4912 Baltimore Avenue location through mid to late summer. Our current plan is to use the hot months of July and August to transfer the bulk of our operations to the new 5123 Baltimore Avenue location. We are usually at our slowest during late July and early August, and so there will be less impact on our customers if we move during that time.”  Continue Reading
