Halal shop at 46th and Walnut closed for now

Posted on 06 July 2012 by Mike Lyons

halal

A neighborhood favorite when it came to halal meat and injera – that hard-to-find-and-even-harder-to-make Ethiopian and Eritrean bread – has closed. But it will be back.

Mohamed’s Halal Center on the north side of Walnut near 46th closed its doors late last month, but its owners plan to return to the area’s food scene in a couple of months with a spot on 48th Street near Spruce at the Center for Culinary Enterprises (CCE), which will house three retail spaces in addition to the shared-use commercial kitchens, an “eKitchen” smart classroom that will include a demonstration kitchen/television studio and other innovative programs. The Enterprise Center Community Development Corporation is coordinating the $5 million CCE.

We’re going to have a lot more on this soon, including the concepts behind the three retail spaces, but we just wanted to pass along the word on Mohamed’s for now. No word yet on what might become of the building on Walnut, which has housed many businesses over the years.

Found extremely friendly, orange and white, (what appears to be) neutered, male cat. He loves dogs, especially the pit that lives next door to where he was found.

Please contact Maggie Parker at KRYZCREWof4@aol.com with any information.

West Philly in Pictures: Scenes From the Neighborhood

Posted on 05 July 2012 by WPL

Here’s a collection of great neighborhood photos submitted by our reader Katrine Lvovskaya. Katrine writes that she “wanted to include a mix of street scenes, buildings, and of course the gorgeous flowers and house silhouettes that are on their best display right now.” She doesn’t have individual titles for them, but altogether they can be called simply “Scenes from the Neighborhood.”

Found grey and white cat (48th and Trinity)

Posted on 05 July 2012 by WPL

This grey and white cat showed up at a house near 48th and Trinity about 10 days ago with no collar. A neighbor who emailed us this information suspects that she was an indoor cat as she only wants to eat dry cat food and if let inside is very well behaved. Please call 773 931 1319 with any information.
