Super cool brunch proposal makes national news

Posted on 07 September 2012 by WPL

A West Philly resident proposed to his girlfriend at Sabrina’s Cafe in Powelton last weekend and made the national news.  Huffington Post says it was “the best brunch proposal ever” and we agree. Dante proposed to Audra by singing to her with accompaniment from a Philly area trombone player he found on Craig’s List. Congrats, folks! Check out the video below.

The construction of Mariposa Food Co-op‘s new store is complete. The new store at 4824 Baltimore Avenue is officially opening this Saturday, March 17 at 10 a.m. There were a few bumps on the road, but the final result looks to be worth it. The new store includes a beautiful produce section, meats, cheeses and lots of packaged and bulk foods. For the first time in the Co-op’s 40-year history it will also be open to non-members, though members (working and non-working) get a nice discount on everything they buy and some other sweet perks.

Project manager Bull Gervasi was kind enough to accompany us on a video tour of the new digs so that you can see for yourself what has been achieved by a group of dedicated Mariposa staff, members and volunteers. To join Mariposa, visit: http://www.mariposa.coop/?page_id=27.

A former longtime Windermere Court resident on getting into the building

Posted on 12 February 2011 by Mike Lyons

I caught up with former longtime Windermere Court resident Patricia Brightful earlier this week at a Red Cross function in Center City at which she and a few other residents spoke. She talks about how residents are trying to maintain contact with one another and their efforts to get answers about the fate of the building and their belongings still inside.

Demolition of the building is scheduled to begin Monday. A rally will be held today at 2 p.m. outside the building at 48th and Walnut.
