Penn is bringing an array of local eateries to its new Food Hall at 34th and Walnut. In June 2017, the University announced that the former Moravian Food Court at 3401 Walnut Street would close to make way for a modern food hall populated by high-quality, small-format food and beverage operators.

The new food options will satisfy meat eaters and vegans, organic juice lovers and ice-cream fans alike. Five out of seven popular local eateries signed on for the new Penn Food Hall: Goldie, Kensington Quarters, Pitruco Pizza, Little Baby’s Ice Cream, and the Juice Merchant.  Continue Reading

Reza Aslan

Internationally renowned Iranian-American writer and religious scholar Reza Aslan will address racism and discrimination against Muslim people in America during a talk on Thursday, Feb. 23. The talk is part of the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts & Sciences’ Levin Family Dean’s public forum, “Fear Inc.: Confronting Islamophobia in America,” which will be held at the Penn Museum.

The forum is free and open to the public.

Since West Philadelphia is home to thousands of Muslims people, this forum is a great opportunity to learn more about this religion and misconceptions about it, in order to understand better our Muslim neighbors.  Continue Reading

Amazon has opened its first Pennsylvania physical site on the University of Pennsylvania campus, at 1920 Commons, 3800 Locust Walk. The facility, which is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 12 to 9 p.m. on weekends, can be used by Penn students and residents alike.

Amazon at Penn will offer more than two million items for same-day pickup for Amazon Student and Prime members and will also accept returns, according to a report by Philadelphia Business Journal.

It’s this time of year again when Penn students are leaving their dorms in a big two-day move-out event, which prompts the closure of a large section of Spruce Street to all traffic except for emergency vehicles. Here’s a traffic advisory for this Tuesday and Wednesday from Penn’s Public Safety Division:

“Spruce Street will be closed between 34th and 40th Streets on Tuesday, May 10th and Wednesday, May 11th between 7 a.m.-8 p.m. for student move-out.

No taxi cabs will be permitted access. Vendors will be permitted access to enter the street prior to the 7 a.m. street closure. Bikes will need to be walked on Spruce Street while the streets are closed to traffic. Septa Route 42 will be re-routed. Emergency vehicles and hospital patient transport vehicles will be permitted access. Access will be provided to the Ryan Vet Hospital.

During this street closure: The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Wistar Institute and Ryan Vet Hospital deliveries will be allowed to enter Spruce Street at 38th Street. Garage 14 will be open and accessible throughout move-out.”

UPDATE (2/8/2016): More steam turbine testing will be conducted on Monday, Feb. 8, from 7 to 11 p.m.

The University of Pennsylvania Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services will conduct steam line venting as part of the Utility Plant upgrade at University Avenue and River Fields Drive, according to an announcement by the Division of Public Safety. This venting is necessary to clean out new steam piping prior to energizing newly installed steam turbines.

Venting will occur at various intervals over a three-day period Tuesday, Feb. 2 through Thursday, Feb. 4, between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Venting will consist of a series of approximately five steam releases into the air from the new steam piping, which will create a high white columnar-like cloud of vaporized water which may look like smoke as it condenses into the cool air. There will be corresponding loud sounds similar to a jet engine. Each duration of venting will be approximately 30 seconds to two minutes.

The Fall semester begins next week at the University of Pennsylvania, and this week Penn freshmen will be moving in. So the University Division of Public Safety is notifying the public of some street closures to accommodate the move-ins. Some segments of Spruce Street will be closed to traffic, including bicyclists, during daytime on Thursday, Friday and Saturday:

Spruce Street will be closed from 34th to 38th from 6:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m.

Friday, August 21:
Spruce Street will be closed from 34th to 38th from 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Saturday, August 22:
Spruce Street will be closed from 38th to 40th from 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
