Police advise caution along Locust near 47th and 48th after string of robberies

Posted on 21 December 2011 by Mike Lyons

crimePolice are advising pedestrians to temporarily avoid Locust Street near 47th and 48th streets during late hours after a string of armed robberies near those corners. Police said there have been as many as four armed muggings recently, including one early this morning when a man’s phone and wallet were taken at gunpoint by two males.

Police have suspects and anticipate arrests soon. We’re trying to get more information on the muggings.

In fact, Southwest Detective Joseph Murray – aka thefuzz9143 – even tweeted a message to the robbers:

“To the 48th St robbers: celebrate Xmas early this year … I have a feeling you’ll be in CFCF [Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility] when the 25th rolls around.”

Subway franchise zoning hearing today

Posted on 21 December 2011 by Mike Lyons

The City’s Zoning Board of Adjustment will hear the case today of the Subway franchise that is proposed for Baltimore Avenue near 46th Street. The franchise is planned for the storefront at 4533 Baltimore Avenue. The Spruce Hill Community Association is still finalizing its position on the Subway franchisee’s application for a takeout permit, which is required for all restaurants. If approved the Subway is expected to have a limited seating area and the owners plan to open it early next year.

Today’s Zoning Board of Adjustments meeting is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. today at 1515 Arch St., 18th floor.

Gaming hub Redcap’s Corner moving from Locust Street to Lancaster Avenue

Benn Roe (left) and Adam Friedman will be moving their gaming shop, Redcap’s Corner, from Locust Street to Powelton Village.

Redcap’s Corner, the venerable gaming shop at 4040 Locust St., is pulling up stakes later this week and moving to Lancaster Avenue.

The shop, which along with Locust Moon Comics occupied a good-sized chunk of the orange, 20,000-square-foot warehouse building that formerly housed Strikes Bowling Lounge (and an original Urban Outfitters), will reopen at a storefront at 3617 Lancaster Ave. in late January. Locust Moon vacated the building earlier this year and will open a new storefront location at 34 S. 40th Street early next year.

For Redcap’s Corner, the move means more retail and gaming space. The move also puts them much closer to Drexel University students, who owners Benn Roe and Adam Friedman say make up a sizable chunk of their student clientele.

The warehouse at 4040 Locust is undergoing extensive remodeling. A branch of Keswick Cycle opened in the building over the summer and at least one restaurant and office space is also planned for the location.

The wheels have come off for Honest Tom

“Honest” Tom McCusker behind the counter at his new shop on 44th Street.

It was a familiar scene to many in West Philly. “Honest” Tom McCusker behind the counter asking for names and taking orders. But this time he was at eye level – not in his famous truck, but at his new shop at 261 S. 44th (between Spruce and Locust).

Honest Tom’s Taco Shop (Facebook link) opened for business this morning and with any luck, McCusker said, they will be open until 9 p.m. or so tonight. Honest Tom’s will be open seven days a week 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Like the truck, the shop is cash only.

Come back in a few days for a review, but we pretty much know how this one will turn out.

Need a Christmas tree? Go see Curtis

Posted on 17 December 2011 by Mike Lyons

Curtis (far left) and his crew are back at 50th and Baltimore dealing Christmas trees with a smile.

If you are out looking for a tree any time between now and Christmas Eve, we highly recommend stopping to see Curtis and his merry crew, who are back again this year at 50th and Baltimore. Like past years, Curtis has a fairly wide selection of trees (we picked up a nice Scotch pine today) at a lot of different prices. They have the string and are really good at tying trees to the tops of cars or wrapping it up to fit in a shopping cart. They also have tree stands.

One of the things we love about Curtis is that he leaves several trees out after he closes up shop each night for those who can’t afford to buy one. Curtis will be on the triangle in front of Dock Street Brewing Co. until Christmas Eve. You can complete the buy local experience by popping in for a beer at Dock Street or crossing the street for a gift at VIX Emporium near the northwest corner of 50th and Baltimore.

Fresh Grocer wine kiosk and dozens of others shut down

Posted on 21 September 2011 by WPL

The Pronto wine kiosk.

It always seemed too good to be true. The experiment in buying wine at special kiosks in grocery stores around the state, including one at the Fresh Grocer at 40th and Walnut, is over.

The Pronto Wine Kiosk program which included around 100 kiosks across various Pennsylvania locations is being shut down due to some monetary disputes between the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) that runs the kiosks and the machine supplier, a Conshohocken-based company Simple Brands L.L.C. The PLCB claims to not have been reimbursed by Simple Brands for over $1 million in expenses it incurred from the kiosks wiring and stocking. Simple Brands were supposed to supply the machines at no cost to PLCB, while sharing the profits.

The kiosks had all kinds of age verification technology and even a built-in Breathalyzer (important for the one at 40th and Walnut streets, which is surrounded by students). But customers often said the kiosks were difficult to operate.

Penn’s student newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian reports that the Fresh Grocer has expressed disappointment over the kiosk closing. It quotes Carly Spross, the Fresh Grocer Marketing Director, who said that this service brought “convenience” to the Fresh Grocer’s customers and “helped bring in additional foot traffic to our stores.”
